One day we will all agree on what a manuscript is.

everyone: wow being a librarian is so cool you just get to read books all day your local librarian: today I had to break up a knife fight in the encyclopedia section

can't believe it's 2025 and i'm stressed about tariffs and measles, like am i a character in an american girl book

I made 500 copies of @marc-fischer.bsky.social's USPS postcard because I am facilitating two workshops this weekend. I plan to hand all of the cards out this weekend. A simple action and I'll bet 25% of the people who take the card won't be aware of the plans to privatize the post office.

If you're a federal employee and you received the "5 things you did this week" OPM email, we just discovered something amazing... www.opmreply.com ☝️ We know you're busy doing your actual job, so here's an efficiency shortcut. (Or ya know, just ignore it.)

Our next #AfricanAmericanHistory seminar features Prof. Kathryn Angelica's paper, "'Conduct Very Bad': The Agency & Resistance of Black Indentured Children within New York's Colored Orphan Asylum." On 25 Feb at 4:30pm (EST), join us for a special seminar. Boyd Ruamcharoen (MIT) presents, "Archive Fever After Empire: Microfilm, American Archivists, and the Postcolonial Tropics in the Era of Global Decolonization." Online streaming will begin at 5pm. Register: www.masshist.org/events/archi...

“I knew someone on AA5432.” That was the subject of an email NPR host Adrian Ma sent to newsroom leaders in the hours after the DC plane crash. He trusted us with sharing his story — and her contagious energy. www.npr.org/2025/02/20/g...

This is 100% correct — I have heard the Silicon Valley money guys admit as much out loud, about *all* of these fools.

At this rate, I think I would prefer to be governed by *actual* children.

It really is cold every time I go outside.

It’s been a journey toward understanding this and I’m happy to share. White supremacy’s only goal is total annihilation. When we try to make ourselves “small” to be fit in and not be a bother or whatever, we’re actually doing white supremacy’s job.

And that’s a wrap here at Historians At The Movies! Thanks to everyone for coming out tonight. Next week we are taking off to watch the Super Bowl. So join us again in two weeks. #HATM

Despite General Halt’s dismissal that the military would invest in beauty parlors, the army has invested lots of efforts, money and resources in maintaining WACs beauty and hygiene #HATM youtu.be/lmQSAIZptCo

The only way soldiers in the field could vote in WWII was by mail. They didn't have time to wait for the conventions before printing the ballots if they wanted them back in time to count, so they were all write-in ballots. Imagine trying to fill that out. How far down the ballot could you get? #HATM

‘Cowboy Carter’ by Beyoncé wins the #GRAMMYs  award for Best Country Album.

Beyoncé is now a 34x #GRAMMYs winner.

They need a couple hundred processing archivists. #HATM.

There’s a lot here about respectability politics that’s at odds with being in the US Army. For Black women, demonstrating and performing femininity and whatever else is “proper” will not save you! #HATM

A sighting of the Negro Digest! #HATM

The US Army Women’s Museum is at Fort Gregg-Adams, named for Lt Col Charity Adams. I donated my grandma’s WAC archive there in 2017, with questions about its longevity: given men’s frailty over achievements of women. They said (w/o flinching) their archive will go to NARA if they’re shut down. #HATM

Women’s workwear has come a long way! But a lot of what we wear now (and by now, I mean before the ‘99 and the 2000), was influenced by women being in the military and working out of the home. #HATM Also, somebody PLEASE give us our pockets back.

There’s a lot of romanticism around military goodbyes and “welcome homes.” When my brother deployed in 2009ish, I couldn’t even imagine what he would go through. #HATM

“We can’t just sit idly by.” #HATM

It’s been awhile since I’ve tuned into #HATM. Looking forward to watching the Six Triple Eight with all these wonderful people this evening. Dinner tonight is taco chili! *Book recs in comments

And welcome to Historians At The Movies! Tonight we are talking about Black history, women's history, and fighting fascism during World War II with THE SIX TRIPLE EIGHT on @netflix at 8pm eastern. #HATM 1/

This week Historians At The Movies celebrates the diversity of women who helped defeat fascism in World War II before fighting for equality at home. Join us on @netflix.com this Sunday Feb 2 at 8pm eastern for THE SIX TRIPLE EIGHT. Enlist in #HATM and we’ll see you soon!

I do miss it, though.

Periodicals study people (@jimccasey1.bsky.social ?) when did newspaper type journalism transition to the idea that the news is presented in an "objective" and "non-biased" format happen? It clearly wasn't that way at beginning c20, and much discussion of how it isn't currently. What's the timeline?

Is it not called a thick six for the big man to get the pick and run it for a TD?!?!?!?! I'm tripping?!?!

Do you have a favorite reading or resource that relates to collection development for special collections & archives? How to be a curator? There's no textbook specifically on this topic and I want to make sure I'm not missing anything in this syllabus I'm creating. 📜

In 2025, I hope you can work on your parasocial obsessions and treat people here (who are not mutuals/ colleagues/ in community with you etc) with the distanced respect strangers deserve.

"See? Cars are just as dangerous as guns!" Which is why we require testing for a drivers license; we also label cars with both a serial number that IDs the manufacturer and a plate that IDs the owner. Good point though thanks for the suggestion, let's regulate guns like cars. It'd be a first step.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. But the Covid-19 pandemic never actually ended. I just had my second bout in July (contracted while masked). So what this means is that we're about to add another disease on top of those already circulating 🫠

Virginia Tech professor and poet, Nikki Giovanni, has died at the age of 81.

In honor of Nikki Giovanni passing:

Most people [most of us] do not have a coherent political ideology, are easily demagogued [see 'crime', 'immigration' etc...], & are working 50 hours a week to survive. These really have nothing to do with intelligence or being smart.

Today’s meditation: “I have food at home.” “I don’t need a full set.” “Get the car serviced.”

Just out of curiosity I tried to ask chatgpt to suggest academic literature on a couple specific topics that I need to learn about for the first time. Out of 10 suggestions, 7 didn’t exist

Throughout the last 25 years, I’ve met — online and IRL — many extraordinary abolitionist and justice organizers, activists, strategists, authors, journalists, artists, professors and even politicians who’ve dedicated their lives to fighting for liberation. These are some. go.bsky.app/UsXPJfU
