Has anybody ever been at a Sherlockian gathering to play “never have I ever“?

Huh, another four years of Doug Ford as premier of Ontario. I imagine he’ll spend them blustering about Donald Trump, about whom he can do nothing, and continuing to let the health and education systems rot. As for my local MPP, the invisible John Jordan, I foresee no change.

Nothing else happening in Ottawa today, and there hasn’t been an announcement of high-speed rail service for a few weeks now, so they’re trotting it out one more time

I wonder if I am the only person who learned about Hamlet from the Baker Street Journal (circa 1964) before ever seeing or reading the play.

Happy to get the new issue of the Baker Street Journal in today’s mail. Happily surprised to find an obscure footnote pointing to an article I wrote thirty years ago. Non omnis moriar!

Nevertheless, it’s a non-starter.

This is a bad, bad day, certainly for Canadians but also, in the long run, for Americans. So much that is so precious is just being thrown away.

US imposes tariffs on Canadian products shipped to that country. Can hardly wait for tonight’s announcement of the Canadian response — maybe an embargo on electricity exported to NY state.

As China is finding out, it’s risky being our foe - as Canada and Mexico are finding out, it’s riskier being our friend.

I suspect that Donald Trump’s planned tariffs on Canadian products aren’t quite as front and centre in US media as they are here in Canada. Does nobody recognize the value of the alliance that’s being trashed? www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

Yesterday, Bishop Mariann Budde told me about the importance of her message in the now-famous Sermon to Trump, what it’s been like fielding hate from some corners over her message of mercy and compassion, and what she hopes people take away from her words. www.advocate.com/news/bishop-...

Is there a Sherlockian group that has made good use of breakout groups in its Zoom meetings? Looking for ideas.

Newsletter from acdfriends.org says fascinating things about Making the Literary-Geographical World of Sherlock Holmes, by David McLaughlin. But academic books are so expensive – this one is £80 from U of Wales Press.

In this morning‘s mail: a $200 cheque from the Ontario government, representing the bribe Doug Ford is sending everybody in advance of his snap election. But that’s not all… I also received, on this 24th day of January, a Christmas card from the Prime Minister. I kid you not..

I think it was E. B. White who brought Tom Paine’s immortal cry up to date: “Soulwise, these are trying times.“ Truer words were never spoken.

I haven’t quite abandoned reading XTwitter, and here’s something I just saw there

Rev. Mariann Budde is exactly who Mister Rogers was talking about. She was the helper I needed to see today. ❤️

I saw somewhere that 28 per cent of students at Queen’s, my alma mater, report some sort of disability. Apparently that figure is actually on the low side compared with other Canadian universities. Wow! www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Me at the liquor store, filling my cart with cheap red wine: “I’ve got bottles from five different countries here!“ Jovial clerk: “Is one of them the US?“ Me: “No, I don’t think so.“ Clerk: “Just as well!“

Trying to decide how badly I want a copy of the latest BSI Press volume, the annotated manuscript of BLAN. The price seems steep and the shipping charge even more so – is this book worth $113 Canadian to my bookshelf?

This threat sounds lilliputian, but the LCBO is the world’s largest single purchaser of alcoholic beverages, and has a near monopoly in this market

I will be very grateful when, or if, we come to the end of today and the sky has not fallen

Volume 2 of Immortal Detective, the anthology of my late father’s Sherlockian work, was launched during the New York #BSIweekend, or at least I hope it was.

Still waiting to see a full list of winners from the ACD Society’s annual awards, which I think were all announced yesterday in NY.

Wondering who’s going to spread the news from tonight’s #bsiweekend dinner after BSI investitures and other honours are announced.

My carbon tax rebate showed up in my bank account today — and out here in the “rural” counties, the amount was pleasantly more than $140 for this quarter.

I am not usually a fan of right-wing premier Doug Ford, but today he nailed it!

Out today! The 10th Sherlock Holmes Bookshop mystery, THE INCIDENT OF THE BOOK IN THE NIGHTTIME! Join Gemma and the gang on a race through the streets of London and to the castles of Yorkshire on a search for a rare book and a killer. From @crookedlanebooks.bsky.social

Sherlock Holmes entering the public domain was a mistake, I can’t see another ad for a network TV adaptation that’s a medical procedural about just Watson

One good thing about not travelling for the #BSIweekend is that I can’t get indefinitely delayed in, say, Denver. Which makes me wish I could somehow put airtags on 300 of my friends and watch them converge on Grand Central.

Just arrived from the Friends of the ACD Collection, my latest opportunity to try to understand the continuing theme of “tabes dorsalis” and syphilis in ACD’s work
