MDFF Selects is hosting the Toronto premiere of WHO BY FIRE at TIFF. I'll be introducing the film and moderating a Q&A with director Philippe Lesage following the screening.

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

Snow day vibes

Luna was really not having the snow

(explaining bugs bunny to a girl) ok the thing you gotta know about this guy is hes basically never serious. He is always clowning on others

"Blame for the inevitable failure of #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld will fall on the POC leads rather than the greedy, anti-art executives at fault — and the film's weak take on race relations in the U.S. only adds insult to injury." A review by @redroomrantings.bsky.social.

put a lot of my nationalist love for the Iranian cinema masters in this piece about the gorgeous, melancholy, whimsical, perfect UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE, in theaters now. spoilers, FYI. @vulture.com: www.vulture.com/article/univ...

Another winter storm for Montreal: Up to 40 cm of snow expected Sunday and Monday “Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”

I don't think film critics should have to review the Marvel movies anymore. Like, I dunno. Should an art critic have to review those big pictures of tomatoes they hang on the wall at Subway? I think they belong in a different category.

A great time was had with @alexwest.bsky.social doing audio commentary for THE GLASS CEILING, part of the new House of Psychotic Women box set from @severinfilms.bsky.social , now available for pre-order severinfilms.com/en-ca/produc...

Indescribably proud and enormously grateful to Kier-La for inviting me to be a part of this really special release; my video essay (edited by Jon Zaurin) features alongside extras from Justine, Alex and Andrea - some of the best critics working today in the feminist horror space 🩷

Marina De Van's notorious IN MY SKIN (2002) now on blu, scanned from the original camera negatives for the first time ever and featuring extras by @redroomrantings.bsky.social @horrornonna.com @alexwest.bsky.social @necromandrea.bsky.social + author of The Monstrous-Feminine herself, Barbara Creed!

What a film. And pleased to see @redroomrantings.bsky.social on commentary duty.

Montreal snow removal is truly the most beautiful bureaucratic function imaginable - a ballet of planning, people and machines. A miracle to witness

Thank you for the interview @noahgittell.bsky.social !

Happy Valentine’s Day! 💌

I’ve lost my patience and not sure how to get it back

My brain is rotted by too much work and too much garbage content

My most trad-wife opinion is that in hetero relationships the woman should not do any planning or gifting on Valentine’s Day.

It’s incredible we share the planet with mythical beasts

Enfin une bonne nouvelle en culture! On lâche pas!

“There’s a lot of anticipation in Montreal’s restaurant scene, and with a number of exciting restaurants rumoured to be opening in the coming months — from first-time restaurateurs and industry stalwarts alike — there’s certainly a lot to look forward to.”

it’s so scary when you realize your phone has been up to stuff while in your pocket

Montreal’s snow removal a little too efficient so you can’t use the storm as an excuse

The circumstances are “we’re not sure if there is a Federal Trade Commission anymore and we’d like to try something”

Some men shouldn’t be allowed to have letterboxd accounts

If I were to offer any advice to writers doing interviews, it would simply be: go for what you feel is most important. Ask the question you’re afraid to ask. Bringing that much of yourself to a dialogue inevitably deepens it and goes somewhere both of you will find exciting.

"Iranian cinema emerges out of a thousand years of poetry, and Canadian cinema emerges out of 40 years of Discount Furniture commercials. There’s something absurd about putting those two together, yet that is the world we live in." Matthew Rankin and I discussed his UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE, out Friday.
