Suggesting that the 🇦🇺 govt has “under reacted” to the 🇨🇳 task force deployment is one thing, but suggesting how they should have responded is quite another. I’m still unclear what is being demanded here. www.aspistrategist.org.au/chinas-naval...

Growing calls for a Plan B - at least 2 I’ve seen in the mainstream press today. I can’t imagine that either Dutton or Albanese will pick up the mantle. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

“We’re paid to be pessimistic” It’s a common refrain from the nat sec community, and was echoed by Hugh Jeffrey last year. I would love to see how anyone can argue that 🇦🇺 Defence & govt are being anything other than ostrich-like over optimistic on 🇺🇸

There is something almost medieval about the expectation that allies and partners turn up bearing gifts and showing a suitable level of subservience and thanks. Difficult to see how the trust essential to alliance relationships survives this.

I think we’ve got a winner here! 😂

Marles is now clashing in public with his relevant program officials over the SEA 3000 timeline. This is what happens when government insists on fantasy schedules & magical thinking, refusing to accept reality when it hits. I'm sure this is fine. www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...

Adding my tuppence to the ongoing discussion over the significance or otherwise of the 🇨🇳 Task Group. theconversation.com/political-fi...

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ “🇨🇳 has just conducted a brazen rehearsal for a naval land missile attack mission against eastern 🇦🇺,” the noted defence hawk said...“We should have stalked the task group with F-35s & [subs] & made it clear that it was within our killing zone.” www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...

'Will you be discussing AUKUS?' Trump: 'What does that mean?' 🤦‍♂️ That said, I was only saying yesterday how AUKUS staying below the level of the political maelstrom in the 🇺🇸 maybe a good thing, so 🤷‍♂️ It does however undermine the repeated claims that “Trump clearly backs AUKUS”.

The regular drumbeat of people saying that SEA3000 should select the 🇯🇵 option due to geo-strategic reasons continues to raise red flags. 1/3 www.aspistrategist.org.au/strategic-an...

“The last use of live fire by a non-allied nation off the coast of Sydney was by Imperial Japanese Navy mini-submarines in 1942.” You mean apart from during Talisman Sabre and basically every other multilateral exercise we do? www.uts.edu.au/acri/researc...

Oh wow… a “trigon”

Fascinating to see how a misplaced public narrative in 🇦🇺 around the EEZ being “ours” is driving the process of territorialisation of the seas even in a country that has championed the rights of maritime states.

Can you imagine if 🇬🇧 or 🇸🇪 had responded in the way that 🇦🇺 has every time a Soviet warship entered within 200 nautical miles of their coasts in the Cold War?! There would have been so much perpetual outrage there would have been no time for any thing else!!!

My favourite bit of this is that the US Attorney for DC does not know how to use an apostrophe.

Ooooofff!

An excellent and measured piece suggesting how 🇦🇺 needs to respond to the extraordinary shifts taking place in 🇺🇸 policy. I also did like this line - “ an arms-for-minerals deal in a shakedown that would make Don Corleone blush” www.aspistrategist.org.au/trumps-turbu...

Hegseth saying the quiet part out loud.

Help! On Friday the National Library of Australia suspended my Trove API keys, threatening 15 year's work helping researchers use & understand Trove. If you use my tools or value my work you might like to let the NLA know. Details here […]

Sad and befuddling news. The NLA has removed digital historian Tim Sherratt’s Trove API access - threatening the award-winning work Tim has done over 15 years to highlight the possibilities of Trove data. Read more updates.timsherratt.org/2025/02/24/y... 🗃️

A post for the ages 😂

Whilst we are all “did they, didn’t they” over the PLAN task group, there is remarkably little attention being given to a story which is potentially far more damaging to 🇦🇺 security The dismissal of the Judge Advocates General seems especially worrying amp.cnn.com/cnn/2025/02/...

🇦🇺 politicians once again covering themselves in glory…. A pretty weak response so far from the government, and a ridiculous diatribe from Hastie seeking to confuse and score points. Great work all. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02...

Interesting numbers in here. It does, however seem remarkable to conclude that Europe needs to *increase* its defence spending by double what the IISS states 🇷🇺defence spending. Genuine Q from one who has very limited expertise in this area www.bruegel.org/analysis/def...

“Commercial pilots warned of potential hazard in airspace around Chinese warships” www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02...

Lots of chat about Australia needing a Plan B given the events in the US, so I thought it is time to re-up this once again. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

"We have a big, beautiful Ocean as seperation' This could be taken word for word from 1930s isolationists (or even before). Statements like this, together with the reported DoD cuts suggest a true return to America First.
