Word of the Day is ‘ingordigiousness’ (18th century): extreme greed at the expense of principles.

Breaking: WASHINGTON (AP) — 21 civil service employees are resigning from Elon Musk's DOGE, refusing to "dismantle critical public services."

Rest in peace

I've never seen so many mobilizations, rallies and actions, honestly. They're happening pretty constantly, in cities but also in small towns and in every single state. They're not getting tons of coverage, but they're happening, and they're growing. Join one, or start one, you're not alone in this.

“The whole question over how many bills they need”? Just one question, Chuck: What the fuck is wrong with you? Step up and fight, or get out of the way.

I know this won't happen, but Hochul removing Adams and then the judge immediately refusing the Justice Dept.'s request to end his prosecution because the rationale that it interferes with his ability to do his job no longer applies would be the week I have always dreamed of Eric Adams having.

Today's mood on film. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) dir. John Frankenheimer

My Uber driver said that everybody wants to believe Hitler escaped to Argentina but that theory is flawed. He said Hitler wound up in Mexico where he eventually died in the jungle. He’s also suspicious of the GPS which okay I’ll give him that.

Game on. #PuckAndMartha

It’s so exciting when celebrities break their silence

Joan Baez, you're an amazing human that continues to speak from a place of truth & justice. "FROM JOAN BAEZ As the recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor, here is my note to Renée Fleming. Sending support also to Ben Folds, Low Cut Connie, Issa Rae, and others choosing to take a stand." #JoanBaez

He’s a very sweet boy.

Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" has perhaps the most memorable opening line in all of Western literature: "I hope you motherfuckers like reading about whales"

Sorry I couldn’t reply sooner I was eating Cheetos

One of the unsung strengths of #Casablanca is the easy repartee between Bogie and Claude Rains, two masters just riffing the Epstein Brothers' sharp dialogue off of each other. #TCMParty

Kudos to the programmers at the Paris Theater, who thought New Yorkers might be in the mood to see Nazis get outsmarted tonight. We were. And CASABLANCA got the most sustained applause I've ever seen a classic film get in a non-festival screening. It was a much-needed catharsis. #FilmSky #TCMParty

It’s Cesar Romero’s birthday. He refused to shave his trademark moustache when he played the Joker so they had to paint over it.

mah gurl (and coven member) @lizhackett.bsky.social co-wrote a new Netflix movie that’s already no. 1 on the charts! it’s a romcom and perfect for valentine’s day so you should watch it! this is my daily allotment of exclamation points!

Email from 10-YO's school noting "an unprecedented amount of illness at school at the moment. Not only more than in years past, but more severe." In other news, it's great that an anti-vax ghoul opposed to most modern medicine is now Secretary of Health and Human Services, love this for us.

This is like an Agatha Christie play only with more poison

Bernard Herrmann's "Prelude" for Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO (1958).

It would be so lovely if I could stop accidentally calling the contacts I'm trying to delete.

Watergate was adorable.

At Cabaret yesterday, Cliff said his line “…if you’re not against all this then you’re for it. Or you might as well be”. The audience interrupted the scene to applaud that line so strongly it stopped the show. Doing a show about the onset of fascism right now is. . . chilling.

Women messing with men's heads du jour: Margaret Roper with the head of her father, Sir Thomas More, after his execution. Taking filial devotion way too far! As imagined by Charles Landseer.

Anne Cresacre, daughter-in-law of Sir Thomas More who was born OTD 1478. Here in gorgeous preparatory drawing for More family portrait by Hans Holbein.

Executed (alas!) on this day in 1587, Mary Queen of Scots. Here just seven years old and already a queen at the court of France. Drawn by Clouet.

watching a knife review where the guy has a band aid on every finger

Really? You mean... just like that? I was assured that was totally impossible...

I can never remember the title of the Blake Lively movie "It Ends With Us” and usually think it's Those of Us The End of Things Nothing Ends The Unending The Girl and Us The Girl on the Bus Us Against the Things A Simple Ending

Most Americans would be okay paying a bit more for snowmobiles and ketchup-flavored chips in order to stop the flow of poutine into our country

USA is about to be reminded that Canada has 2 moods: 1. I’m sorry 2. You’re gonna be sorry 🇨🇦 #ViveLeCanada

Today from Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny: snyder.substack.com/p/the-logic-...

Canada and Denmark share a 1.2 km long land border on Hans Island since we ended the Whisky War in 2022. So technically we could join the European Union.
