RPA’s @benedictpringle.bsky.social discusses the urgent need, in this disinfo age, for the regulation of elections ads on ad industry podcast The Agenda this week. 👇 open.spotify.com/episode/0Uh8... Thanks to ad regulation expert Brinsley Dresden for your support also. @lewissilkin.bsky.social

J.D. Vance is wrong about free speech & tech regulation. One of the biggest dangers we face is the weaponisation of social media to flood the zone with lies & intimidation, in spaces where no-one is responsible. Also my column here on the Paris AI summit. www.theneweuropean.co.uk/damian-colli...

1. Ad industry veteran Manning raises some elephants in the room at the ad industry's annual event. We'd add: electoral ad regulation. "After discussing "the importance of trust in our industry, the conclusion was, “We’re in good shape”" Hmmm www.thedrum.com/opinion/2025...

We agree with the sentiment of your research @channel4tv.bsky.social: "Urgent industry action and new regulation needed to protect 'gen Z' from false information online." www.channel4.com/corporate/ab... It also has some parallels with our campaign ask. 👉https://reformpoliticaladvertising.org

News from the US. “$24.6 Million Penalty Against Meta for Not Meeting State Political Advertising Disclosure Requirements”. “This decision was one of the first … for not providing details of political advertising run on its system.” www.lexology.com/library/deta...

I assume we get this quite frequently when pointing out polling errors in bar charts with political parties. (Ahem) including with the @libdems.org.uk.

5 years on from Brexit. We couldn’t get an ad as misleading and impactful as this again could we? We are absolutely bound to as there are no rules to prevent it. And by the way our elections are littered with misleading ads. See examples on our site. reformpoliticaladvertising.org/resources/

Thanks to John Johnston for featuring us in his excellent @politico.eu newsletter this week. You can read it here. 👇 www.politico.eu/newsletter/p...

With respect and constructively meant - it might be an idea to apply the same rigour to the @libdems.org.uk use of polls. Agreeing to this draft code would be a significant step towards that. It would also provide guidance to party members. reformpoliticaladvertising.org/reform-polit...

@eddavey.libdems.org.uk: we “need to make our own online safety laws fit for purpose, being far tougher in holding social media companies to account”. The time has also come for election ads rules to rebuild trust and to hold political parties to account. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The 2025 Edelman trust barometer is out today and their data (which is across multiple countries) shows that the "fear that leaders lie to us" is at an "all-time high". You can read the report via this link. www.edelman.com/sites/g/file...

Biden’s farewell address no less: “ Social media is giving up on fact checking. The truth is smothered by lies told for power and for profit,” Biden said.” It’s time for the UK to start taking election ads seriously. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

This seems unlikely … but that’s what everyone said about Twitter. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

How topical. The Royal Mint is honouring the 75th anniversary of George Orwell’s death with a £2 coin. The coin’s edge inscription reads: “There was truth and there was untruth.” Picked up from @localnotail.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/books/2025/j...

“Administrations like the current Labour government in the UK have a narrow window in which to act if they wish to resist this powerful trend.” @emilybell.bsky.social also rules for factual claims in election ads ahead of May. reformpoliticaladvertising.org www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

It is great to see the progress of this parallel movement in Australia @australiainstitute.org.au 👏👏 Two states in Australia already have rules for factual claims in election ads and there are moves to get scope in place for national elections.

Our interview in @nation.cymru this week: Wales has a historic opportunity to take action to restore trust in politics by implementing the HoL recommendation for election ad regulation. @rhunapiorwerth.bsky.social @juliejamesms.bsky.social @prifweinidog.bsky.social nation.cymru/news/wales-c...

"Fundamentally, viscerally, ideologically, he [Zuckerberg] just doesn’t think the social consequences caused by his platforms are his problem. Thanks to Musk, he no longer need pretend." @hugorifkind.bsky.social www.thetimes.com/comment/colu...

1. Welcome @eddavey.libdems.org.uk. Your new comms approach and accurate bar charts would take the @libdems.org.uk brand forward quite considerably. We'd love you and the @libdems.org.uk to officially sign up to this code before the May elections. reformpoliticaladvertising.org/reform-polit...

Well the advertising industry seems to have gone into a meltdown of sorts on Linkedin today about Zuckerberg's announcement about removing fact checkers from the platform.

It would be a good time for the government to take forward the HoL recommendation for the regulation of election ad fact based claims. The “decision to end Facebook and Instagram’s factchecking program has set the stage for a fact-free four years online” www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Good and concise summary as ever by @rosatkins.bsky.social. www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/...

What could go wrong? This isn't in the UK (yet) but this 'flip flopping' is a good reason why for election ads we need rules set by a regulator rather than individual platforms making up their own (and different) rules. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... @zsk.bsky.social @livmcmahon.bsky.social

Yes it was a very good meeting of those who want to be constructive about how to make British democracy better.

This was a good meeting of minds before Christmas hosted by @fairvoteuk.bsky.social with @gavinesler.bsky.social that discussed various measures to protect democracy. Thanks to the MPs and Lords that took part including Mark Drakeford, Emma Best and @elliechowns.bsky.social.

We have a part solution to the disinformation wave that we'll see in May and the next ge with increased spending limits and potentially additional funding: Electoral ad regulation. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Find out more here. bsky.app/profile/refo...
