if the other farmer can afford it

Its either the government or mega-corporations If most of our food comes from abroad wouldn't we want to change that and grow most of our food here instead? As I said, what if a war breaks out, what if our main food providers cannot provide? The UK will starve. Think about the C02 saved too

I'm all for using the land to plant trees instead of keeping £million ponies. But it is good to still have farmland with fields such as wheat just in case of world food shortages,(wars are breaking out).I believe we shouldnt discourage food production, but I agree keeping the land for pets is a waste

Yup, and then the government buys the land, builds a bunch of windmills and flats and then we have no food when a war breaks out. fun

It would make a huge difference, and make the countryside look really ugly. And you'll probably damage some wild-animal habitats and cut trees down in the process.

problem is that most farms are worth over £1m, especially with all the assets & stuff. Farmers also get quite a small profit for the work they put in, so it will cost a lot for farmers to pay the tax off too. This will only raise a small amount of money. Think about the £22B wasted in carbon capture
