I don't envy our American counterparts at present, but this is an opportune moment for Canadian journalism to reflect on how we cover politics and democracy and how we can do it better.

Not surprised. When he specifically mentioned her and others on the daily show, I assumed this was coming.

Carney's speech could be a bit more succinct with better flow, but he seems to have the tools to improve. Also, with the analogies, it seems his team is trying to do better with men than the current PM.

Read through the list hoping it wouldn't be as disappointing as promised. It was clear Erica's point was valid. All of these supposed progressives telling her the appropriate way to disagree validates critiques that progressives are paternalistic and see racialized people as tools. FOH with that.

Agree on the points of feasibility and timing, but discounting this as a dumb idea in general might be a misread.

He's said this many times... I think in @aaronwherry.bsky.social's book and in conversation on Erkine- Smith's podcast.

The grotesque symmetry in January 6th being the day of an attempted right-wing fascist coup and the day of resignation for one of the most progressive leaders on the world stage.

I would add extension of parental leave and better take up of benefits like GIS, CWB and (finally) Canada Learning Bond.

Latest from me. A short piece on the Freeland-Trudeau breakup and what it all means. tl;dr A visit from the Ghost of Christmas Past. geraldbutts.substack.com/p/the-ballad...

Whatever happens to Trudeau, I wonder what things will look like for Freeland long term. Regardless of how justified she was, her actions are also clearly a power play. Will party supporters appreciate this with more time to reflect?

So my first Bluesky post: Perhaps the bright side of this week's dire circumstances is that the new voices in Cabinet give more credibility to voices who haven't been of the centre of power. Maybe some needed new perspectives.
