Rereading Orwell's Homage to Catalonia and this passage reminded me of why 1984 is popular but Homage, not so much.

A tiny, intensely illuminated Italian book of hours, newly acquired at the Boston Public Library. Copied in or around Brescia at the end of the 15th century, this book has never been in an institutional collection and will soon be digitized. In other, exceedingly local news: I'm still feeding and watering the gang of kittens who live next to my house. It's been 5 months now. My cat usually gets up on the woodpile and keeps an eye out while the not-my-cats eat.

I'm studying for the exam now and it's giving me a special kind of agita. My accent these days is an unholy mix of American, Parisian, and slow southwestern French.

We could just be reading great books, watching good movies, and eating fruit. Instead we have to survive/fight miserable power hoarders. What a waste of limited time.

Opened an old novel and found a bookplare drawn by comic strip artist Dorothe Carey of photography historian Robert Doty.

I am watching movies about the French Resistance. This one, Is Paris Burning?, was co-written by Gore Vidal and Francis Ford Coppola. Stars include hot Alain Delon, hot Anthony Perkins, hot Jean-Paul Belmondo and hot George Chakiris. The thing about resistance is: it's hot.

When I opened the shutters this morning, the mail person had just pulled up to the front of the house. "Let me guess," he said. "Books?" He placed a big box of @mcsweeneys.net right into my arms through the open window. It was like fish jumping into the boat!

Just seems like making an illustrated edition of A Picture of Dorian Gray is asking for trouble.

The BBC are live streaming Up Helly Aa - the biggest fire festival in Europe - from Shetland. The celebrations culminate in a torchlit procession and the burning of a replica Viking galley: www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cn...

Views from the house: two outdoor kittens protest empty food bowls, another checks out the perimeter, and my own cat observes the sunrise from a windowsill.

Just some of the many bookshops in Hay-on-Wye. Would you believe there are this many lovely bookshops in one small town!

For years I've dreamed of visiting Hay-on-Wye and other bookshops across the UK. Looks like I finally have the time to do it. Before I start planning an epic road trip, I'll have to find someone to look after my cat Bébé and all the kittens who live next to my house.

Garth Risk Hallberg and Brandon Taylor will discuss Mavis Gallant and the new collection of previously unpublished stories that GRH edited TOMORROW NIGHT at McNally Jackson Seaport.

Never underestimate the importance of every individual voice and the power of your peaceful protest, your campaigns and petitions, your love, grief and fury, your righteous anger, fear and empathy. Hope is an energy. Hope is a group project. And we have so much work to do.

The view from the back door. Five absolute chonks greet me every morning. They eat like kings, romp all day, then they sleep next to the house in fleece-lined beds.

It is a little-known fact that Roland Barthes invented the seasonal out-of-office email reply in 1975 when he replied to a survey sent to him by Les Nouvelles littéraires with the words, ‘The year is over. I’m leaving in two hours. I’m no longer involved.’

Kittens in the mornin' Kittens in the evenin' Kittens at suppertime They have taken over my carport and I don't mind one bit. I just spread out the firewood to dry and it's now a playground/festival of scratching posts.
