On this day in 1982, over lunch at the Bright Star Café on Panola Street in New Orleans, R.E.M. agreed to sign with I.R.S. Jay Boberg had seen them on-stage the previous night at the Beat Exchange.

On this day in 2007, R.E.M. were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at a ceremony in New York City. Eddie Vedder presented the honour. The other inductees were Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, the Ronettes, Van Halen and Patti Smith. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q-l...

On this day in 1991, 𝑂𝑢𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒, R.E.M.'s seventh studio album, was released. Produced by Scott Litt and R.E.M., it became the band’s first chart-topping album.

On this day in 2004, 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑓𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑆𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑒, a live DVD of the band's performance in Wiesbaden, Germany, the previous summer, was released on Warner Bros.

On this day in 1984, R.E.M. played the Mad Hatter in Athens, with Nightporters providing the support. Thereafter, the band outgrew the Athens venues, and future shows in the city took place outdoors or were performed under pseudonyms or with minimal promotion.

On this day fourteen years ago, R.E.M. released their fifteenth and final studio album, 𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑝𝑠𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑜 𝑁𝑜𝑤, produced by Jacknife Lee. In 2021, Mike said that he believes the album is in the canon of their finest works.

On this day in 1991, R.E.M. appeared on NDR in Hamburg, Germany. ‘Half a World Away’, ‘Fretless’ and ‘Radio Song’ were given live debuts, while ‘Losing My Religion’ was performed live for the first time with all band members present.

Someone on Wikipedia had the good sense to remove these one-off shows as not actually being “reunions”. The hype is incredible.

On this day 30 years, Bill survived a brain aneurysm suffered while on stage at the Patinoire de Malley Auditorium in Lausanne, Switzerland.

On this day in 1989, the band began the North American leg of the Green World Tour at Louisville Gardens in Louisville, Kentucky. Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians provided the support.

OTD in 1991, ‘Losing My Religion’ was released as the first single off Out of Time. “We thought, ‘How many mandolins do you hear on the radio right now?' Not very many. We’ll just put it out and we won’t tour, and we’ll probably fade into obscurity, and no-one will ever hear of us again.” - Mike

On this day 40 years ago, R.E.M. played the Moonshadow Saloon in Atlanta for the L.E.A.F. Benefit. They were supported by The Squalls. Mark Mytrowitz, a native of Kearny, New Jersey, worked with the band for the first time. Microwave died in 2008, aged 52. www.legacy.com/us/obituarie...

On this day in 1985, R.E.M. went into Electro-Acoustic Systems, on Broad Street in Athens, with their new producer, Joe Boyd. They recorded 14 tracks, which were released as part of the 25th anniversary reissue of 𝐹𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑠 in 2010. ‘Throw Those Trolls Away’ became ‘When I Was Young’, then ‘I Believe’.
