Law professor here: Things are F-U-C-K-E-D up.

BOSTON (AP) — Trump administration freezes $2.2 billion in grants to Harvard after university defies its demands over campus protests.

If you're wondering where Pam Bondi got the language "district judges have no right to interfere with the executive branch's ability to conduct foreign affairs," she got it from the Supreme Court's "unanimous" ruling in the Abrego case.

I hope my comic book colleagues are taking this seriously with con season ahead of us.

Just looking back on what Fox considered a scandal 4 years ago. www.foxnews.com/politics/kam...

First time we’ve seen this in any poll in a long time.

Some major public institutions in Canada, including a pension management firm and a leading hospital, are advising staff against traveling to the US.

This is their argument. In court. Not just a theory. From today at Law Dork: www.lawdork.com/p/trump-told...

Emily Ratajkowski criticizes the Blue Origin space launch in new video: “You are going up in a space ship that is built and paid for by a company that is single-handedly destroying the planet.”

We've reached the point in our descent into fascism where the Jewish governor's house getting firebombed on Passover by a guy trying to bash his head in with a sledgehammer is overshadowed by the story of the President saying he wants to build foreign gulags for US citizens.

The executive branch is a weird mix of WW2 Nazi Germany, freaky Christo-fascist ideals, and the Mob. Trump literally has a guy named Boris taking meetings at a steakhouse to shake down law firms for favors. 🥴🥴🥴 www.thedailybeast.com/donald-trump...

It’s like the press assumes that because he’s completely unprincipled and a total asshole he must Get Things Done, but in fact he gets nothing done

When following the legal pathways to citizenship gets you renditioned, who is going to ever go near ICE again? They are just making it monumentally more difficult to enforce our immigration policies by making immigrants distrust law enforcement.

University of Alaska reports four international students have had visas revoked without notice, reports Corinne Smith of @alaskabeacon.com: alaskabeacon.com/2025/04/14/u...

I’ve just posted this video message to members of the DC Bar, urging them to vote *AGAINST* AG Pam Bondi’s brother to be its next president. Please pass this on to anyone who is eligible to vote. www.instagram.com/reel/DIcQFxt...

Also all clownfish are male except when the lead female dies one literally transes its gender!!!

In addition to other reasons (ie, tyranny, racism, petty revenge, fascism, self-aggrandizement, etc)… …I expect that Garcia has experienced & can give horrific descriptions of torture, mistreatment, abuse, & human rights violations… …& that is an incentive of some strength not to do so.

In September 2021, Texas banned nearly all abortions. A JAMA Pediatrics study found that, between 2021 and 2022, infant deaths in Texas surged 12.9%, compared with a much smaller increase in the rest of the US of 1.8%. Infant mortality rates rose 8.3%. www.cnn.com/2024/06/24/h...

“The ‘swinginess’ of young men voters suggests that the gains made by Trump in 2024 could be reversed. This is not a demographic that is locked into one political party or candidate.”

tbh the interesting thing about lobotomies, when you start researching, is how UP IN ARMS people get at the idea that they were given to queers, or uppity women, or whatnot. rarely do you see anyone saying "yeah, lobotomies were EXACTLY the same level of tragedy for psychotic people as anybody else"

There's perhaps no stronger vindication of measures used during the COVID pandemic than the opposing view being the public health policy of the people who happily deport their own citizens, threaten the sovereignty of their allies, etc. MAGA's COVID views are not the one exception to odious policy.

*sigh* we barely have healthcare

I wonder what is meant by “freedom technologies”… Marc Andreessen is a tech billionaire, DOGE advisor, and close ally of Peter Thiel. 1/

Trump and his deportation "goon squad" are openly defying a Supreme Court order to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. They’ve crossed your “red line,” Senator Schumer. Will you step up and confront this constitutional crisis or capitulate... again? @schumer.senate.gov The Reformers

Trump withdrew from the US-Mexico Tomato Agreement and set an 21% tariff on Mexican tomatoes starting in July. Sort of like the tariff equivalent of the student loan debt forgiveness program for Pell Grant recipients who start a business that operates for three years in disadvantaged communities.

The other thing that's interesting is people who have quit target say they're buying less overall. Like yeah Costco is getting some of the traffic, but you don't really pop into Costco to just get one thing and walk out with 20 items the way ppl said they did with Target

People really have sock puppets?

Don't worry guys, Chuck Schumer is on the case!

My big question is whether today's little circus gives her cause to demand that one of them [cough, Miller] has to show up and risk contempt. Thus far DOJ has been setting up barriers to the real contemnors.

I don’t really give a shit how much of a conservative this makes me sound like, but the United States has suffered an existential collapse in the civic virtue of our citizens necessary to sustain a liberal democracy.

This was the natural conclusion to all of the screaming about higher ed being ‘too liberal’ — an actual political litmus test for faculty hiring and admission. To be clear, this was never how affirmative action actually worked, but this is how MAGA wants it to work for them.

if they knuckle under for this their legitimacy is shattered, to the point that I'm not sure that district judges will still be bound in practice. If SCOTUS starts seesawing every which way in a web of contradictory John Robertsian evasions it effectively makes federal law Choose Your Own Adventure.

important context about the concentration camps in el salvador:

Three days, three different declarations, each increasingly insolent and removed from the people involved. Just utter contempt, all while protecting the real contemnors.

NEW: DOJ files a DEFIANT declaration, an hour late, answering none of Judge Xinis's questions and suggesting Abrego Garcia cannot and should not be returned. The declaration quotes President Bukele: "How can I smuggle a terrorist into the United States? Of course I'm not going to do it."

Yes, we're in constitutional crisis. Right now.

Has anyone in the legislative branch developed a plan for what to do when/if the executive branch finally, formally tells the judicial branch to get bent? Congress? Anyone in there with a plan? A thought? A response other than futile spluttering?

Second day in a row that DOJ misspelled “Kilmar” as “Kilmer,” even though it’s spelled correctly in the case caption. Yesterday’s misspelling is here: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
