I talk gay about metal sometimes, and shout at my sports teams. Also cats, dogs, spicy food, and nerdy stuff. Epiphanic Truth's semi-official hype-man. He/him

Re support for gay rights in the 90s: At med school, I was in an ortho radiology meeting. The HO brought up an x-ray, and said: "This is a 34yo male hairdresser who was a restrained passenger in a car accident." One consultant said, "Was he rear-ended?" All the surgeons laughed. This was 2007.

Amazing that, the first time England's half-backs ditch the dated attacking gameplan and play to their skillset, they actually get somewhere. Almost like the coaching is worse than the playing talent...

And yeah I just did two in one day, but ADHD made me get behind, and then told me to catch up. So sue my undermedicated arse.

Next, In Awe Of by Cult Of Luna. Incredible now to think Vertikal could have been their swansong, had they not found the next step they were longing for. What a way to go it would have been, mind. Few records sound so much like a yawning chasm of loneliness in a crowd. Especially ones this heavy.

That was, indeed, Not Fun. I think that makes it Schammasch o'clock. They've done even better, but there's something about Split My Tongue that still pushes my buttons. The way it coils you tighter and tighter with discordant repetition, only to spring you lose with thunderous fury. Mega.

Why the hell did I have to have an Oyster Card when contactless was coming just behind it? Also, Section 28. Which is admittedly bigger, but less petty and whimsical. And less likely to get me banned if I say what I think about those responsible.

Lastly, before the Not Fun begins: Immortal. Unearthly Kingdom. If there ever is an icy horde that sweeps out of the North to cover the world in perpetual winter and eternal night, this should be their anthem. Oh Mighty Ravendark, Immortal were incredible. Without equivalent.

And now, intensive Leprous care. Cos sometimes only Distant Bells will do. Pitfalls kinda wouldn't work without this song. It meanders and entrances, but it wouldn't quite hang together if it didn't have that resolution to coalesce around. The ecstatic acceptance of that refrain makes the album.

Following up the Inter Arma therapy with some Light Bearer massage. Silver Tongue is kinda like the inverse of Through Silver In Blood, but still crushingly heavy. Both build slow and rhythmically, but where Neurosis turned to tortured rage and existential crisis, LB bring hope, optimism and joy.

Today promises to be properly Not Fun. So I'm activating the protocol, 'in case of emergency, listen to Inter Arma'. That bit in Stillness just kicked in, where it sounds like it's about to get heavy, but then they keep edging you for a bit instead. Godlike.

These ginger biscuits don't look too bad, despite my earlier concerns. Fingers crossed they pass the taste test now.

Cat.

Had a baking disaster yesterday. Today's cheer-up bake is not looking hopeful. This is cos I forgot to put on some music beginning with B, ain't it...

Well that was clenched. West Ham have a mess of a squad, but Potter seems to have more ideas about how to use it in his first week than Lopetegui did in six months. Plus the players look way more on-board with what they're being asked to do. Good result against good opposition. I'll take it.

Fulham gifting West Ham goals is very helpful. When you've not got any fit forwards old enough to vote but not old enough to remember the poll tax, it's useful if the opposition goalkeeper gifts you one when you're on the ropes. Ta, lads.

Ah man, Tony Slattery dying has knocked me weirdly hard. We never met. There's no connection between us. But somehow his death has me so sad. He was a superb talent. He made me laugh a lot at a formative age, and I'm very grateful for that. I just hope he knew how fantastic he was. RIP, sir.

I had someone in the music industry tell me that, when a musician they knew had recently charged with a horrific crime, that they had spoken to them, and believed them when they said they were innocent. That musician later pleaded guilty to all charges. They're still inside.
