Picture PPG Paints Arena packed for a Pens game. That’s nearly the number of people in my district who could lose Medicaid coverage if Republicans pass this big ugly reconciliation bill. And right now, the Senate is voting to make that nightmare a reality. In the House, I will absolutely vote no.

From illegally detaining green card holders, deporting US citizens, and now limiting birthright citizenship—this administration and SCOTUS continue to find ways to deny us our fundamental rights and to push people who don’t look like them to the margins. These are dark days for our democracy.

The level of open and unchecked Muslim hatred, bigotry, and fear mongering all over TV, social media, and in Congress is disgusting. Members like Andy Ogles shouldn't just be censured, they should be out of this job. And every person silent on this should be ashamed.

Childcare is essential in this country, yet in places like my home state of Pennsylvania, the average cost is $14,000/year. Parents can’t afford childcare. Caretakers can’t afford groceries. And Republicans are cutting the programs that help both. The status quo is unsustainable.

This Supreme Court continues to chip away at our freedoms under the guise of “values.” Blocking folks on Medicaid from Planned Parenthood means stripping basic care — birth control, STI testing, cancer screenings — from those who need it most. It is cruel and calculated.

Today Rep. Ramirez, Rep. Jackson and I reintroduced the Equity or Else Resolution. The disparities our communities face are by design. We need a holistic framework for our policies that are rooted in real experiences. Grateful to have shared this space with our movement at a roundtable today.

Three years ago, the Supreme Court ripped away our right to bodily autonomy—but we’re still fighting. We have to restore abortion care. Protect reproductive healthcare. Address the Black maternal health crisis. And Congress must finally pass our Women’s Health Protection Act. Lives depend on it.

🚨 PA-12 is under a Code Red heat alert. This kind of heat is dangerous, especially for seniors, kids, outdoor workers & unhoused folks. Check on your neighbors. Stay hydrated. Find your local cooling center. Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat.

Neither the president nor Netanyahu gets to bypass Congress and declare war for the United States. Trump was supposed to explain to the American people why this illegal attack was in our interests, not a foreign nation’s. Shame on every politician that supports this executive overreach.

This is your hypocritical, “anti-war” president who just illegally struck Iran and is putting countless lives at risk.

Trump is acting fully outside of his authority and is once again trampling on the Constitution. This is an illegal and terrifying escalation. Dropping bombs on Iran brings us closer to war and he is putting millions of lives at stake. Congress must pass our War Powers Resolution to rein him in.

I look forward to the day Mahmoud Khalil is returned home to his wife and meets his newborn son after this administration illegally detained him.

Juneteenth is the story of liberation from one form of bondage but it’s also a reminder that the finish line was never just freedom from slavery. In this moment, we have to continue fighting for our shared liberation—no matter who tries to silence us, deny us, or erase our history.

Trans youth and their healthcare are under attack—and now our highest court has joined in on the assault. While this ruling is no surprise from a right-wing Court stacked with extremists, it leaves families and young folks vulnerable. Our kids deserve to live authentically.

It’s disturbing how many warmongers there are in Congress—on both sides of the aisle really—but I’m not sure when being a Democrat meant normalizing bloodlust for killings abroad. Not exactly a value of neighbors and families like mine from Braddock or Pittsburgh or anywhere in PA. People will die.

I joined State Senator Lindsey Williams at East Liberty Family Health Care Center to oppose Republicans' dangerous Medicaid cuts that would hurt 14,000+ folks in PA-12. These cuts would mean no chemo for cancer patients, no medicine for seniors, and no speech therapy for kids.

I just signed on to this War Powers Resolution to prohibit unauthorized U.S. involvement in the escalating crisis between Israel and Iran.

The President does not have the power to unilaterally declare war. Congressional authorization isn’t optional. When some profit both financially and politically from endless war, the rest of us pay the price. We can’t let them lie us into another conflict that will cost innocent lives.

Without the Community Development Block Grant program, we wouldn’t have repaved streets, accessible ramps, or safe alleys for emergency vehicles. Trump’s budget would devastate small towns like Dravosburg. Local communities matter and we’re going to fight to protect their funding.

Happy Father’s Day to every dad, granddad, and father-figure showing up with love, care, and presence. Today we honor you and we fight for a world where every family can thrive.

The politically motivated assassination of Rep. Melissa Hortman and attack on Sen. John Hoffman is unconscionable. Public service should never be a death threat. Praying for their families. There must be a swift investigation.

Israel’s strikes on Iran risk broader regional violence. Innocent civilians will be caught in the crossfire. We cannot allow a war criminal to drag American troops and resources into another endless war. Diplomacy is the only way forward.

Let’s be clear: it’s Trump’s policies and abuse of power that have instigated and escalated the situation in Los Angeles. It’s his overzealous ICE agents. His deployment of the National Guard and Marines on the American people. Protesting a fascist regime is a First Amendment right.

A fascist state looks like a duly elected Senator being manhandled by police for questioning executive abuse of power. Not surprising considering the instigation and escalation of violence we’ve seen from ICE and DHS in Los Angeles. The people deserve better.

9 years ago, 49 people, most of them young, Latino, and LGBTQ+, were murdered at Pulse Nightclub. Pulse was a celebration of life and love + it became a reminder of how fragile both can be for marginalized communities. Today we honor them with truth, with love, and with action.

The violent arrest of SEIU CA President David Huerta is unacceptable and he must be released immediately. Protesting Trump’s authoritarianism is a constitutional right. We won’t back down while he swipes our neighbors off the streets and ignores due process.

“We are so busy thinking and living in this nostalgia for bipartisanship, for civility that just does not exist anymore.” Congresswoman @repsummerlee.bsky.social (D-Pa.) joined @mehdirhasan.bsky.social to discuss Hakeem Jefferies and how Democrats need a stronger response to fight the Republicans.

“So many people have looked at [Gaza] and rightfully called it what it is, are recognizing that this is a genocide, that this is a forced famine.” Democratic @repsummerlee.bsky.social tells @mehdirhasan.bsky.social that Gaza is a genocide & “we are running out of room for anything else to call it."

Job Corps is transformational for young people, and the Pittsburgh center has been incredibly successful. Yet DOGE and this admin wanted to kick students back out on the streets due to false data. Grateful a judge blocked this illegal order. We must keep these centers funded and open.

The True Justice Act would expand access to public defenders at bail hearings because due process must be a right, not a privilege. Everyone deserves a fair shot in court. Proud to reintroduce this bill with @scanlon.house.gov

Wishing a blessed Eid al-Adha to our Muslim neighbors in PA-12 and across the country!

The Israeli government’s genocide and forced famine in Gaza is collective punishment funded by our tax dollars and carried out with American-made weapons. The U.S. must withhold weapons—from them and any entity violating international humanitarian law. Congress must pass the Block the Bombs Act.

This your Secretary of Education?

Lee: Would say it would be “illegal DEI” for a lesson plan on the Tulsa race massacre? McMahon: I’d have to get back to you Lee: Do you know what the Tulsa race massacre is? McMahon: I’d like to look into it more and get back to you on it.

This admin is taking its lead from Jim Crow and calling for the removal of “illegal” diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility from schools. Just because Secretary McMahon doesn't know something doesn't mean students across America should be deprived of learning history.

Keeping the victims and families of the horrific attack in Boulder, Colorado in my prayers. Violence has no place in our communities, and no one should live in fear.

Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ This month we continue to honor the movement for queer liberation, dignity, and joy—a movement born from resistance, built by the people, and carried by the masses.

Clean energy saves money and lives—and Clairton’s Solar for Schools project is a momentous step in the right direction. Instead of cuts, Congress must protect and expand these investments. Thank you Climate Action Campaign for leading the way.

Once again this White House is making baseless, cruel cuts—this time to Job Corps centers, including in Pittsburgh. These centers provide young people with educational support, career + technical trainings, and housing. Congress already funded them thru FY25. The admin must reverse course.

Pennsylvania nurses have faced one of the worst staffing shortages in the nation, with little action even after the pandemic. Standing in solidarity with Magee nurses as they fight to unionize for better staffing and a voice in patient care.

On Memorial Day, we remember those who gave everything in service. Their sacrifice reminds us to care for our veterans, neighbors, and families. Honoring the fallen means caring for the living.

If it’s “radical” to say housing is a human right, maybe we need to stop letting billionaires define the word. They get the whole pie, the bakery, the land it sits on—and STILL want to come for our crumbs.

Skin cancer is one of the most common — and preventable — cancers in the U.S. But not everyone gets the same access to protection, education, or early detection. This #SkinCancerAwarenessMonth, share info, check your skin + protect your people: preventcancer.org/skin

Harvard stood up to government overreach—and now the Trump admin is retaliating by targeting international students. This is political revenge, plain and simple, and the message is clear: submit or be punished. International students aren't bargaining chips for those in power.

A judge just blocked the Trump admin's unlawful attempt to gut the Department of Education and ordered the reinstatement of over 1,300 fired employees. This win belongs to our students, our educators, our communities and to everyone who believes education is worth fighting for.
