New on the Blog: Increased UK military spending is in the political spotlight but the huge & increasing proportion that is spent on nuclear weapons is not. Steve Barwick & Tim Street make a compelling & urgent case for much greater scrutiny by Parliament. rethinkingsecurity.org.uk/2025/04/24/t...

We join 30 civil society organisations to call for global leaders to uphold their legal and moral responsibilities in light of the ICJ’s Advisory Opinion, which states that Israel must end its unlawful presence in the occupied Palestinian territory:

A very useful re-read from Paul Rogers on the dangers of loosening posture on nuclear weapons, amid much careless talk of the UK rearming with, and potentially sharing, 'tactical' nuclear weapons. rethinkingsecurity.org.uk/2021/06/25/u...

Right now, the UK government is trying to pass ANOTHER anti-protest law: the Crime and Policing Bill. Check if your MP is on the list and email them today: amnesty.org.uk/actions/email-mp-protest Protest is powerful. We can’t let anyone forget it.

Europe is drifting into a new nuclear crisis, with the risk of conflict rising fast. New @rethinkingsecurity.bsky.social article exposes the fallacy behind calls for a European nuclear shield, and makes the case for a new nuclear forces reduction treaty. rethinkingsecurity.org.uk/2025/03/20/e...

"the Spring Statement has confirmed that the gov't is sacrificing the poorest & most vulnerable, both internationally & in the UK, in pursuit of major military expansion." Analysis of last week's announcement by Stuart Parkinson of @responsiblesci.bsky.social demilitarize.org.uk/spring-state...

🚨 Outrage as 20 police officers break into Westminster Quaker Meeting House and arrest six. 🚨 This shocking violation of a place of worship is a direct result of crackdowns on protest and dissent - freedom of speech, assembly and democracy are at risk.🕊️ 👉 www.quaker.org.uk/news-and-eve...

Good thread on how the Finnish government long ago recognised that the human security of its people was the foundation of its national security. Well-being, education, relative equality and functional democracy 🔀 trust & resilience.

The UK was never allowed a national conversation or consultation (barely even a discussion on Whitehall) about the risks and benefits of the US 'security guarantee' when it was widely assumed to exist, and it certainly isn't going to get one now that it is widely assumed to have been withdrawn.

"It is now essential to (...)build an alternative security model. One possible starting point could be to revive nuclear arms control and disarmament in Europe. This will require re-establishing high-level European contacts with Russia, independently of the United States" 👇

Join us this Wednesday evening to share your thoughts on the current security crises and how the UK, civil society and citizens can help to build more sustainable security.

🚨New Blog post: 'Europe needs a new Nuclear Forces Reduction Treaty, not a Eurobomb' With Europe awash with proposals to share, ‘extend’ or procure nuclear weapons, Ian Davis & Paul Ingram argue for urgent revival of disarmament between Europe & Russia. rethinkingsecurity.org.uk/2025/03/20/e...

The Labour government approved 23 individual arms export licences to Israel worth £11 million between July - September 2024. 4 open licences were also approved - these are of unlimited value.

'2.5% of GDP...3%...3.5%...do I hear 4%, anyone?' It's easy to despair at the grotesque military spending bidding war. Happily, @rethinkingsecurity.bsky.social have produced this excellent resource that everyone can use to show that there is another way. rethinkingsecurity.org.uk/introductory...

An excellent riposte to the idea that surging military spending, even if spent on production within the UK, is going to produce positive, progressive outcomes for the UK economy, let alone those in left-behind areas.

"The West needs to rethink its cuts to international assistance, not only due to a clear moral imperative to save lives and, at a minimum, to ‘do no harm’, but also to secure its own future and contribute to peace."

🚨New Blog Post: 'Bridge to Nowhere: UK security strategy in the ruins of Atlantis' As Western security alliances fragment, Richard Reeve makes the case for ‘thinking beyond the unthinkable’ in the UK government’s next National Security Strategy. rethinkingsecurity.org.uk/2025/03/06/b...
