When I heard the Sheargold audio, despite him saying it was a joke and humour, the tone was anything but. It felt disdainful, hateful, and really nasty. The "makes your hackles rise", "sensing danger" kind of nasty. No doubt sensed by many and why it's blown up more than just bad joke backlash.
