And the libraries in slave-holding states were a fraction of the number within free states. Can't have poor whites realize that racism is being used to rob them.

You, Sir, are as culpable as that sick youngster who committed murder today. By refusing any responsibility, you encourage this kind of violence. Just like during COVID, you sit blissfully unaware while people die. If you don't think constitutional rights can be controlled, leave Harvard alone!

First of all, you should know that guns DO shoot people. That's what they're designed to do. Just ballistically, you're an asshole.
Second, since you don't care about the life of ANY American who isn't you, you are probably unaware that you can have a strong Second Amendment and controls.

Federally charged for supporting a Constitutional right? Gorka couldn't be more anti-American if he tried

Of course she hated the hat. What purse would go with that headgear?? Obviously a refined dog lady.

You forgot that many of them are also Hispanic. Trump wants to make America as white as he can. Not just a fraud and a crook, but a real bigot too.

Gorgeous story. I saved the runt girl of a litter with hand-feeding and a few vet visits. She now demands that she sleep on my pillow and that I must put my head close enough for her to keep her paw on my head. Dogs have a love instinct that would make us better humans.

It was also a choice about simple humanity. Those who weren't afraid of the "other", who knew why black lives matter, who knew that immigrants make society richer, and who might be more open to love. I also listened to my heart and conscience.

Russia, Russia, Russia. All boils down to that.
Why would Trump do Putin's bidding? Why does Trump work to destroy Putin's strongest enemy from within?
He's the real Manchurian candidate. A paid or compromised traitor who is owned by Russia

Oh, I grew up in New England and, yes, I'm damn proud to be an American Yankee. Sorry if that offends, but Trump doesn't represent America's values or greatness.

The military industrial complex was first mentioned by President Eisenhower and suggests that arm manufacturers will have a strong voice when it comes to budget decisions. Your point?

Actually I'm an immigrant to this country who knows what dictators look like first-hand and who believes in American democracy as a bulwark to prevent tyranny. I was naturalized joyfully (before Trump) and have four post-graduate degrees from differing universities.

Actually, a more viable conspiracy theory would be that the billionaires among us have that power of control. The military reports to civilians and career officers are honor-bound to stay out of politics. Douglas MacArthur faded more quietly than he would have liked. So, no, don't buy that idea.

That's what we had and that has been eroded by unfair gerrymandering, vote suppression, and the current Republican cult that grants too much obeisance to a burgeoning dictator. We could have moved forward to an even better democratic system. Today, we're fighting to keep what we once had.

That right to vote. Freedom of speech and assembly. A rule of law that forces certain procedures on those in power. Civil rights that are enshrined in a Constitution as the supreme law of the land. Regular elections so the people can change their government. Divided government to rein power.
comment in response to

Point taken, but democracy in that sense cannot exist in a large nation. A population of several million people cannot vote fast enough or astutely enough on every needed piece of legislation. The compromise is representative government where the people vote for their representatives.

I'm 72. Old enough? And nothing about the fascism of the Christian right ever surprised me. They gave the politics game away with Falwell's Moral Majority.

I know my country and Trump is the epitome and zenith of all that is wrong with us. But America is still a good country with decent people that will continue to work to make the promise of our founding come to full fruition. We will persevere and triumph. Equality. Freedom. Law.

A country can have racism and ethnic prejudice (which are both clearly bad) and still be a democracy and one ruled by law. Our Supreme Court said in "Loving v. Virginia" that "it is impossible under our Constitution for a crime to be dependent on the race of the actor."

Oh, let's try from July 4, 1776 to January 19, 2025 for starters. There has always been some adherence to law and principle before this, but we have the Nazi party in power now. So, we take the power away and jail these smug fascists. Starting with the Orange One.

That's just needlessly hating those who realize they made a mistake and would reconsider their vote today. It also excludes potential allies who might be won to our side. If you're talking revolution, we need more bodies. And, why become as hateful and reflexive as those idiots?

Maher is an adulatory ass who mistakes sycophancy for sophistication. Were you not aware? Trump is outwardly cultured, but he has the humanity of a pit viper. It doesn't take a lot to see that obvious fact about him.

I knew Trump superficially and I've never heard anyone describe him as kind. Sociopathic yes. You are aware that Nazis were prosecuted and should have been, but the average Nazi was just reeducated. We need to see the potential in changing minds when we can. Let's be more human than Trump?

Exactly. That's why I no longer fly. Airline deaths during Obama and Biden? Zero. During Trump so far? EIGHTY-FIVE.
I drive now or Zoom. Airlines have lost my business. Economy suffers. Regs encourage commerce. Idiots.

We agree on Trump. I just have seen kindness and humanity there with Trump voters. They can change. Trump never will. We should pray for them and just pose a question or thought for their consideration. They're better than the man who received their votes.

If Trump cares about antisemitism, why was his first response to the arson against Josh Shapiro's home to say that he would have to look into it? Hello? It's reprehensible and has no place in America. Simple. Nope, it's a smoke screen for the real goal of creating "thought police".

I've talked to many MAGA. Many are lied to by Fox and think Trump is an awesome guy. I fault their lack of research, but they're not evil. We need them on our side. We can get out of the burning building faster if we all batter the doors together.

Only problem with that? It's a house fire and we're inside. In the end, we're ALL victims. And, we can't blame people for casting the wrong vote. Enough Magats have regretted and more will.

And, yes, it's millions. And he's not done. We need to change the Constitution to allow for a recall of the president. He's both grossly stupid and morally bankrupt. Who smiles at the thought of an innocent man in prison? Pure rotten sociopathic evil.

As a man of God, I pray that he be brought to his eternal rest quickly. He should face all the souls of the MILLIONS he has destroyed. The dead from his COVID negligence, those whose lives were blighted by his fraud of the poor, and, now, those who will die needlessly in a torture prison.

When he chastised America for being FIRST in COVID infections and deaths, it reminded me that a million people died from that pandemic. Trump was in charge. Now, he's decimating public health .... I wonder if he wants to top his last effort?

It's a brotherhood of butchers. To think that America thought it was great when we had FDR, JFK, Reagan, and Obama. The fact that THIS is what gets celebrated by our current "leader" tells me that we have fallen to a par with North Korea.

Trump refers to Kamala as the "Failed Presidential Candidate". However, isn't it worse to be a Failed President? After his first term, he was considered the worst president in a poll of historians. After term 2, he will end up infamous like Judas, Mussolini, or even Hitler. Impeach now!

The slippery slide is underneath our ass and gravity is taking over. Dictators take till they are stopped. We must pass a Kilmar Abrego Garcia bill demanding his return and providing counsel for all those prisoners so that all can have due process.

Chuck, we are past the niceties of academic debate. This is the moment when the Chancellor of Germany embraces fascism and the question is how hard we fight or if we acquiesce. Every day spent showing "concern" is another meaningless Susan Collins cosplay.

The US has never signed on to the ICC. Technically, they have no authority. We have to prosecute the SOB ourselves and jail him!
