Those air bubbles compromise the consistency and integrity of the clay. If they're still there when the clay goes into the kiln, the piece will explode because it doesn't have the necessary integrity.
Some people think they're solid, when in reality they're resistant to change and lack integrity.

You have to knead or "wedge" the clay to get those air bubbles out to make it more pliable so you can shape it into what you need it to be. Wedging is difficult and requires a lot of hand and arm strength because the clay is so unyielding. But it's a necessary process.
