Everybody check on your group chats. It’s rough out here.

As this "pause" hits you and your project, institution, workplace, etc: TELL SOMEONE ABOUT IT. Contact your MoC, esp if they're a Dem. Contact a relevant advocacy group. Contact the press, local, regional, movement, trade - and not just for an LtE, for a story. Tell real life stories of harm.

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

Fuck.

VERY SELDOM do politicians tell constituents to call other politicians to pressure them to do the right thing. So I very much appreciate this. If you're in Michigan, this is a thread worth looking at.

The little Tiktaalik wants YOU to go to the Paleontological Research Institute’s website, buy a bunch of plushies of Paleozoic life, and help them out in their time of dire financial need! pri-gift-shop.myshopify.com

My husband just helped me understand how awful people who create good art: "Neil Gaiman is a character created by Neil Gaiman." His public personna was convincing. He might have thought it would be labeled non-fiction forever. His art and his facade contain good characters. But he isn't one.

Now imagine how tiny the pool of competitive trans athletes are…

I would like this comic I drew in 2017 to stop being relevant pleeeaaaaase

This is easily—EASILY—the best thing to ever happen to me on Al Gore's internet. Thank you Mr. @wdmbox.bsky.social for your encouragement. I will do my very best to keep going 💪

for anyone who needs an accessible new year’s resolution: use alt text bonus points for toggling on “require alt text” in your bluesky accessibility settings see you in 2025 💫

Hey fat friends and fam, it's that time of year again. This month is especially unkind to us, and I want to remind you of a few things: • your body is YOURS, and no one else's • movement should be joyful, not punitive or penitent • you do not have to "earn" food you enioy, or food in general

I enjoy reading Julia Serano's work about gender, because she's nuanced and precise in her arguments, without being impenetrably academic. The two links in the quoted post are a good "sampler" of her style. If you like them, you'll probably enjoy her longer work.

Compared to the same period in 2023, solar output in California is up 31%, wind power is up 8%, and batteries are up a staggering 105%. Batteries supplied up to 12% of nighttime demand by storing and redistributing excess solar energy. 🔌💡 electrek.co/2024/12/31/c...

Tell an artist/writer/podcaster/maker that what they’re doing matters to you. They want to hear it. Making shit is lonely work most of the time and it helps to know that the circuit is being completed somewhere.

I'm not asking full-time motorists to bike. I'm demanding cities equitably use tax dollars to build high-quality mobility options for those who can't or don't want to drive. If people ditch their cars later, great, but this is about giving real choices, not mandates.

Doing a periodic reread of @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social if anyone needs it. Little shot of hope/action caffeine.

Everything you know about wrinkly fingers is probably wrong. Particularly, it is not a physical act of water on the body, it is a neurological effect of the body on itself. People who have fingers with severed nerves do not prune on those fingers.

Some great climate news for the end of 2024. This type of state-level initiative is going to be increasingly important as the federal government goes soft on climate (and much more).

I also grabbed this sticker from them, though I don’t think I’ll be holding onto it very long

Did you know that you can get trained in IUCN Red List assessment for free online? I have my undergrads do this as a semester-long assignment to understand policy-relevant science. You can do it too! 🧪🦑🌎 www.conservationtraining.org/course/index...

One of the very cool things about this case is that the court called one of the original framers of the MT state constitution to help interpret it because our constitution is only 50 years old and Mae Nan Robinson Ellingson was 24 years old when she helped write it.

This is such a lovely mini review! If anyone else fancies grabbing one of my pins, you can get them here: canopyrobin.etsy.com/listing/1813...

Social Bonds May Save Our Lives Join or Die is part of a cresting wave of cultural production circling around the intertwined issues of loneliness, divisiveness, and our political right turn. hyperallergic.com/967515/join-...

Data shows that California property crime rates are at historic lows. But “people's perception of how at risk they are has changed over the last four years,” one researcher noted, in large part due to shoplifting videos that have gone viral on social media. boltsmag.org/califor...

Big thanks to @mekka.mekka-tech.com for spotlighting this article in his thread on what police actually do, and why the NYPD’s slapstick performance after the UHG CEO shooting was not at all surprising. We Minneapolitans have really got to get this evidence into the city’s political conversation.

I had the pleasure of offering a workshop on Art and Science Communication last week through @ecologicalsociety.bsky.social 's communications section and it was a delight! So many great ideas. It was also a good balm for the ol' imposter syndrome.

If you had told me 4 years ago that I'd be genuinely delighted to be in a room of toddlers banging on various instruments for an hour every week I would have been skeptical. But it's SO much fun.

Every year around now, I start to see grad students on social media bemoan that they’re going home for the holidays to a family that doesn’t understand their research, or what they do in general, and it breaks my heart. 🧵 🧪 #SciComm

In the (somewhat unlikely) event that people seeing this don't know, ADF (Alliance Defending Freedom) is a designated anti-LGBTQ+ hate group -- and largely responsible for a lot of anti-trans laws like the one in TN. NYT doesn't disclose this anywhere, in the piece or in French's bio.

I’m actually a grown adult with fully formed thoughts such as “trans people should be allowed to just exist and have human rights without assholes questioning their humanity” and I don’t need to hear the opinions of anyone who disagrees with that. It’s not a debate and I won’t pretend it is.

"Do not cede institutional or organizational authority in an attempt to remain apolitical. Facts matter and professors, scientific societies, and universities are considered public goods because they are sources of expertise."

🚨🌎 BIG NEWS: The Biden-Harris administration has officially awarded over $100 BILLION in clean energy grants from the Inflation Reduction Act. The awarding of these funds — which are making a real, tangible difference for both our planet and communities — protects them from Trump.
