NEW: We just launched a podcast! 🎙️ Break In Case of Emergency is a Canadian podcast about audacious climate solutions rooted in justice and workers’ rights. Listen now: www.climateemergencyunit.ca/podcast (or on Apple and Spotify - more directories coming soon!)

A petition to revoke Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship and passport has reached almost 100,000 signatures. www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en...

Exactly why I've been writing, podcasting, and damn near screaming about using the right language. The mainstream media is failing us SO badly right now. Stop. Calling. This. Shit. DEI. This is (re)segregation. This is racial purging. Cleansing Black people from positions of power.

Happy proxy war hockey game for all those whose are forced to exist in North America.

We chose in part to raise our kids in Canada because they’re much safer from gun violence here than in the U.S. The last thing I want to see on city council is someone using NRA talking points. By-election turnout is always very low—if you live in Vancouver, PLEASE vote & keep this guy off council.

How’s everyone’s mental health holding up?

🏫🛢️ Report from @cape-acme.bsky.social & @forourkidscanada.bsky.social: Fossil fuel industry shaping climate education in Canadian schools. 39 companies involved, materials downplay industry's climate impact. Youth demand honest climate curriculum. More on this pressing issue:

Metro Vancouver’s climate leadership is at risk. @cape-bc.bsky.social Chair Dr. Larry Barzelai & I wrote about why this matters for public health—and why cutting climate programs now would be a mistake. Let’s make sure Metro keeps moving forward, not backward. Read our op-ed in the Vancouver Sun:

Are you a caregiver, #parent, or grandparent who cares about your kids/grandkids? Send a letter to the federal government to demand support for robust critical climate #education. #cdnpoli www.forourkids.ca/parent_feder...

The Metro Vancouver Regional District is considering cutting funding for climate programs - despite these programs doing incredibly important work and representing a tiny fraction of the budget. If you're anywhere in Metro Van, please take a minute to send a letter to the Directors before Friday!

Well it was throne speech day in B.C. and what a sad spectacle it was. First, Premier Eby doubles down on the toxic shell game that is LNG/fracking. Then leader of the Greens—who've clearly snapped back into bougie politics—does mainstream investment blather. #bcpoli thenarwhal.ca/bc-throne-sp...

I've just read CAPE's new report on how fossil fuel companies are sneaking their messaging into Canadian classrooms. As a parent of two elementary school kids, this is infuriating. Our kids need climate education based on science, not industry PR. 1/

🧵"So this is how liberty dies..." Trump’s first 3 weeks have been a relentless flood of actions. It's incredibly hard to keep up. I’ve gone through 69 actions & mapped out the pattern - showing how they fall within 5 broad domains consistent with authoritarian states 1/9

We build vehicles that weigh 9000 pounds with 1000HP, can go 0-60mph in 3 seconds and market them recklessly. We then ask people to wear construction vests to cross the street. This is all so beyond absurd and it's truly incredible that we've normalized this.

Canada’s new Rural Community Immigration Pilot offers permanent residence to skilled workers who want to work and settle in rural and more remote communities. 14 pilot communities will approve certain employers to hire for jobs that they can’t fill with local workers. More info here:

Great stuff here from @thewalrus.ca. More local/regional coverage is exactly what's needed right now. thewalrus.ca/the-walrus-l...

I've been able to brush off most of the erasure of trans people from government websites, but this one is REALLY getting under my skin. It's just complete revisionist history. How fucking dare they Old vs. new

I don’t expect Trump to have a King Théoden-style redemption arc, but there’s no question that Elon Musk is his Wormtongue.

CAPE is concerned Eby’s fast-tracking plan is “laying the groundwork to expand LNG, an industry responsible for worsening health & air & water quality, increasing healthcare system costs, insurance rates & the cost of living, & [which] is making the impacts of climate change even more dramatic...”

As a denizen of East Van, I am SO excited about some of these proposed new bus routes, especially the line on East 1st and the Renfrew Express to North Van. Please take the survey and express your support for ✨new bus routes✨!

We don't want to hear "the pedestrian was wearing a black jacket" ever again

“It’s understandable to want to diversify and loosen economic ties to the U.S., but we now have an opportunity to be leaders in clean energy—not dirty LNG...—securing good jobs, affordable energy for households and businesses, and a safer, healthier future.” - @drmelissalem.bsky.social

In 2021 large sections along a 130km stretch of the Coquihalla washed into the river; it was fully re-opened in a year. But when a couple hundred metres of probably the most popular pedestrian & cyclist path in the province is damaged? Oops sorry maybe we'll fix it in 7 years! 🙃

Here’s a story with some numbers. The proposed cuts are unfathomable: a 60% reduction to NSF would be the end of American science as we know it.

It really says a lot about the state of the world when this is one of the least alarming headlines I've read all day.

I had to dig a little deeper than poor Elon, but I’m going to go with this one.

We got rid of our last gas appliance recently, & just got this letter from FortisBC urging us to ‘reconsider’ gas. Wild to see a fossil fuel company this desperate to keep people hooked on methane. Fossil gas is terrible for climate & health—especially for kids. This is straight-up propaganda.

I know all of us who understand what is happening are experiencing mental health challenges because of that. The only message of comfort I can offer to this community of readers is this: you are correct. What you think is happening is really happening, and is just as concerning as you think it is.

I can. In fact, the Canadian version is so great, I can't think of an American equivalent. 🧵

The tariffs were a distraction. There is a coup happening before our eyes.

Y'all pick a lane. Then make a little progress in your lane each day. Every serious, experienced organizer I know is Doing Their Thing. Instead of freaking out about each bit of bad news, we're in our lanes rapidly building dual power infrastructure and networks that don't rely on the goverment.

While I'm glad to see Premier Eby stand up to Trump’s bullying, I'm concerned that he’s using this moment to push for fast-tracking fracking & LNG. Current events call for real climate leadership—doubling down on fossil fuels isn’t the answer. BC must invest in clean energy, not more gas projects.
