It is set in the US rather than latin America but The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is a story of the Chicago stock yards and struggle for unionization.... might be worth a look

This is close to where I live. Green and greater spotted woodpeckers are common and I will often see sparrowhawks but the sense of what has been lost is really sad...mind you a red kite is not unheard of so that at least is a recent gain

A wonderful book. It sprang to my mind this morning when I heard the sad news
