when i visited the front in 2015 i met a Ukrainian sniper in his late 50s or so who had fought in Afghanistan. hated it. never ever wanted to go to war again. but he has two sons so he picked up his rifle again so they wouldn't have to. I'm sure they've joined by now. Hope they're alive.

The common gaming motif of the adventurer who crafts their own arms and armor is an interesting one to me, because this was basically never true of anyone at any point I can think of in history. Snipers don't make their own rifles, knights didn't forge their own armor and so on.

I beat Super Metroid today. It is a really good game, and I loved it very much, and it reminded me of how-- not unlike the assassination of JFK-- video games have a way of seeming like just a really fun pleasant time, but then suddenly they hit you with surprise emotions that you never saw coming.

Pleased to report that I love Avowed, the latest RPG from Obsidian. I expected strong writing and combat, but what’s surprised me (and kept me wanting more even after 40 hours) is the exploration. Everywhere you turn there’s a secret or treasure or rooftop to climb — it’s dense and full of life.
