02/09/2025 at BBSP. This Broadbanded Water Snake was struggling, but hadn't captured prey. Its teeth were caught on a plant stalk! It changed grip & pulled free! This 2024 carcass from BBSP shows the myriad hooked teeth & red spots like this live one from 2017.Video: www.rickubis.com/rick/snake_s... 🐍

Houston sees a reasonably warm day today, but later this morning and through the evening there could be showers and even a few thunderstorms. That changes overnight as drier and sharply colder air moves in. You’ll want to bundle up on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. 🥶 #houwx

On the trails at BBSP, I use a 6' stick . Folks ask why. 02/02/2025 I showed folks how to use it to estimate the length of a gator that had crossed in front of us. Note the tail & head relative to trail edges. Place stick on the same spot & compare. vid: www.rickubis.com/rick/gatorcr... 🐊 🧪

Vliegende gekko's hebben grote huidflappen op hun lichaam waarmee ze van boom tot boom kunnen zweven en gevaar kunnen vermijden.

🚨 Big plesiosaur news 🚨 Our paper is out. We describe pigment cells and scales in a Jurassic plesiosaur. Small scales are found at the limbs which enforced them. Body and tail are scale-less. Many thanks to lead-author Miguel Marx & the team. www.cell.com/current-biol... #Science #News #Nature 1/3

Hi, I'm Earyn, and I'm a lizard scientist! I created a game to teach people about lizards and increase the representation of Black women as herpetologists. #findthatlizard is a Where's Waldo-esque game where there is a lizard camouflaged in its environment. Your challenge is to find it. Will you? 🦎

Peekaboo with a Crabronid wasp. Look at that face and those colors!

Ok! Here we are then! Let’s get a ride on Blue Sky too! Here’s a Bitis peringueyi adder to start with! :-) #snake #namib

01/24/25;At Fiorenza Park;Coots were scavenging dead fish killed by the freeze. For years,I'd thought Coots were herbivores,so was surprised to see them scavenging. White Pelicans were also picking up carcasses & moved towards Coots if they found something. Video: www.rickubis.com/rick/coots_f... 🦉

Baby Gar or Stingray? Here’s what a newly-hatched Spotted Gar looks like. That round structure is the yolk sac, with the tail tapering to the right, head on the left (look closely and you can see eyes!) Fun Fact: baby gars are poisonous at this stage!

Dearc sgiathanach, one of the largest well-preserved pterosaurs from the Jurassic, now fully analysed! The description of this toothy Scottish fella, hot off the press, hit BMC E&E. But what does it tell us about pterosaurs? 🤔 bmcecolevol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....

Shiny jumper. Solid bronze flea jumping spider (Naphrys pulex) with black glass eyes, after assembly but before patination and polishing. Such a charming curious fellow 😎 from my last solo show #SciArt

Anglers used to dismiss it as a “trash fish.” Now fishermen (and scientists) are recognizing the gar for the amazing creature it is.https://www.texasmonthly.com/travel/all-hail-the-alligator-gar-a-giant-and-primordial-river-monster/

01/12/2025 This morning, at BBSP, a Limpkin appeared in almost the same spot where I'd found the remains of a Apple Snail a week before. The prey looks like a snail but I can't be sure. Video is here: www.rickubis.com/rick/limpkin... more limpkins on my page: www.rickubis.com/rick/limpkin... 🦉

Brazos Bend State Park 01/12/2025 When the weather gets cold, where are the alligators? They're still around, and you can find them if you know where to look. I'd already known where this one hides & was watching for it. Still, I was lucky to see it come up. 🐊 #Alligators

01/05/25 At BBSP, empty Apple Snail shell at West end of Pilant Lake. It was a fresh. 3 components left in a tight arrangement: Pink, toxic "albumen gland"; the operculum & the shell. Raccoons and Limpkins eat these, and both live in the park. Apple Snail page: www.rickubis.com/rick/pomacea... 🧪🐌

In 2012, I made this anigif of the Acrocanthosaurus. I've collected many similar sets of such "rotation" photos of many of the exhibits @hmns.bsky.social . This gif was an old experiment. For #FossilFriday , since I can't upload my own anigif via PC, here's a link: www.rickubis.com/rick/acrocan...

Exciting #Arachnology news! It's been clear for some time that spiders have 'noses' on their legs but we didn't really understand how they smell airborne sex pheromones. Now we do! Gabriele Uhl & colleagues have identified the sensilla responsible: 🕷️🧪 www.uni-greifswald.de/en/universit...

On the bright morning of 12/21/2024, Roseate Spoonbills were a bit closer than usual at Fiorenza Park North. Many of the usual birds (Cormorants, Coots, Egrets) were also around. It's a 350-acre park for water detainment of Brays Bayou,West of downtown. 🦉 Video: www.rickubis.com/rick/spoonbi...

In 2008, I got a camera that captured 210FPS video. In 2011, I put slowmo clips of 29 bird bird species-filmed 2008 thru 2011-into a single film(slowed 7x). It's down to 38 min. with 21 species. Not all "great" clips, but some are pretty good. Filmed at BBSP. 🦉 www.rickubis.com/rick/birds_s...

This pup is so good at wagging his tail that he broke the space-time continuum. 12/10 honest mistake
