Doesn’t matter who you voted for. Dorinda Cox’s switch to the ALP is a slap in the face to the voters who put her in the senate. Talk about cynical bad-faith politics. #auspol

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: A woman (70s?) is waiting at a public loo. A voice comes from a cubicle: "Pass me a pen will you, Sandy? There's some horrible grammar in here and someone's gotta fix it." Sandy produces a pen and hands it over. The Grammar Police Strike Again! (1)

“He had a simple message for the assembled startup founders: the money you can make in AI isn’t limited to the paltry market sizes of previous technology waves. You can replace the world’s workers – which means you can capture their salaries. All of them.” Anyone else see the flaw here?

If someone bangs on about government waste. Remind them that private enterprise takes all the fibre out of our diets and then sets up factories to make and sell supplements so we can put it back.

I generally, and silently, poo poo the wearing of ear buds in cafes and such. But Mr Human Doom Scroller and mansplainer at large - a regular at my cafe - has a loud voice and an absolutely endless supply of opinions. In which case earbuds are a genuine gift from God.

Anyone else notice how delightfully hermaphroditic all the democracy sausage graphics are? #auspol

It’s not a “cost of living election”. If it was, support for the old, the unemployed, and infirm would be on the cards. It’s really a “cost of living for the middle class” election. #auspol

I keep asking. What was wrong with advance? Why does everyone keep saying advancement? I bet some wankers have even tried advancementing on for size.

There’s a man comes to my favourite cafe with boundary issues… who might best be described as the human equivalent of doom scrolling. It was a lovely morning. So I say out here to avoid him. He walked out to me and launched into a monologue about the statistical distribution of prostate problems.

#auspol I am no fan of the potato. But really, enemy narratives are to politics what puns are to wit - it’s lowest form. All that energy doom-posting about Dutton - that’s just monkey-brain poop-hurling. I’d like to hear what you want to do, not who you want me to hate.

Why on God’s green earth have we all decided to replace the perfectly serviceable, and elegant “preying” with the bloated, ugly “predating”??

I’m not sure the implied premise, that boomers wee mostly progressive, is sound. After all, apart from the Whitlam blip, decades of their lives coincide with conservative governments.

The best One Nation ever did on the national vote was a bit above 8%. #auspol Which makes me wonder why the LNP might think the way back to power was to move to the anti woke populist right. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I wish we were less dismissive and cynical. But I am heartened neo facism is not thriving here.

The Guardian take’s doomscrolling to depressing new levels

I have never understood any version of the sentence…. 1 in x people with y are undiagnosed.

I think there is a big vowel shift going on in Australian English. Where people my age pronounce i as “eye” in the middle of a word people in their twenties all seemed to have switched to such a strong “ay” I often misunderstand them. site is turning into sate.

Not long until we are shuffling towards the booth and scarfing a democracy sausage. Here’s a thought: A democracy that isn’t tribal is one where you agree or disagree with something based on what was said, not who said it. Vote for your issues. www.abc.net.au/news/vote-co... #auspol

As the election gets closer, we're backing the Raise the Rate for Good campaign by ACOSS calling for action to address poverty in Australia by raising the rate of income support payments.  Learn more: https://www.raisetherate.org.au/about_the_campaign  #auspol #ausvotes2025 #raisetherateforgood

🧵Spotted at an Easter Fair in Aotearoa New Zealand: A small human (4?) is clutching a shark plushie like a talisman as she looks around her with a thoughtful expression. She's not sure about this market business, but she's got her shark, so everything's gonna be okay. (1)

My own irrationality takes the following form. I really believe English spelling should be more phonetic than it is. And I take care to avoid -ize endings because I can’t abide people thinking I am American. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Utterly #randomshit A smirk is characterised by its asymmetrical mouth movement, lack of eye involvement, and brief duration. These features are consistently recognised in both psychological research and facial coding systems.

@theguardian.com can be a sloppy about how they categorise their stories. Putting an article about that girlie Blue Origin flight in their Science section is a bit of a stretch. Tech maybe. But Science???

Today my favourite barista brought in piece of baked cheesecake for me that she made at home. There are people who aren’t family, or friends, or even colleagues. They will come and go. But we can learn who they are. We can find small moments of kindness. My Chrissie taught me that. #widower

I often use an app over my coffee to practice some aspects of music. Key & mode recognition, harmonic progressions, interval recognition, etc. Today a young girl saw it and began talking to me about music and her violin lessons. Good on her nearby father for letting her be an inquisitive child. 👍

You never know how well experience has taught you until something triggers it. This morning I spilled CA (aka ‘super’) glue all over my right hand. The protocol kicked in instantly… Splay your hand. Touch nothing. Put it under water. Rub it off as it cures. Wipe with acetone. Phew!!
