After a brief respite I am back to getting a review request pretty much every day. Not sure if the massive increase in the last 18 months is a career stage thing, or whether everyone is experiencing this. Spend most days feeling guilty for rejecting the requests.

How are people with disabilities represented in the German Parliament? @vivifabrien.bsky.social @lizamugge.bsky.social and I explored this question, looking at both the representation of substantive interests and the presence of representatives with disabilities. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Wir zeigen warum es ein Mythos ist, dass die Sozialdemokratie ihre Wähler*innen an die radikal Rechte verloren hat:

We are still calling what Germany has a "mixed member system", which would imply that there are constituency and list MPs. But that is factually not true anymore. Germany changed its electoral law to get rid of overhang and compensatory seats, to create a fixed sized parliament of 630. 🧵

Want to conduct experimental social science but not sure how. The Centre for Behavioural, Experimental and Action Research (C-BEAR) has a summer school to show you how, led by the friendly bear, @pspada.bsky.social. Find out more and register here: store.southampton.ac.uk/short-course... #polisky

Difficult to know what Trump and his acolytes would have to do for the US media to start reporting on them as fascists. Repeated Sieg Heils? Nope. If they all turned up to CPAC in SS uniforms, US media would probably report it as, "a controversial choice to to don historical military outfits".

A mesage of hope before the German elections this weekend.

My latest article, written with @benclift.bsky.social and @benrosamond1.bsky.social, is out #OA in Economy & Society. We use Brexit discourses as a window into the gendered politics of economic expertise. @sotonpolitics.bsky.social 🧵 doi.org/10.1080/0308...

Interesting short piece by Piketty in Le Monde yesterday, on Trump and on how Europe should respond to him. www.lemonde.fr/blog/piketty...

Herman Hesse's The Glass Bead Game keeps popping into my head in a troubling way.

Excited that our @jeppjournal.bsky.social paper is in print 🙏 In survey experiment in NL & DK with elected representatives, we find public opinion directly shapes politicians' views, while interest groups have weaker effects, mainly influencing aligned legislators @ecprinterestgroups.bsky.social

Our article 'A Crisis of Political Trust?' led by @viktorv.bsky.social is now out in @bjpols.bsky.social! Around the world many people pay live, work and pay taxes without the right to vote. Scotland and Wales have moved to residence-based voting. What would be the effect of residence-based voting in the UK? Find out in a new report.. tobysjamesdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-content/u...

I've been sporadically adding people to this Democratic Innovations Starter Pack over the last few weeks. Now up to 140 members. go.bsky.app/LX11yEA Sorry if I missed you, I find Bluesky not the best at notifying about replies.

So delighted we are hosting this. Do share with any early career people who might be interested!

This is what Google Maps looks like from outside the US. Has to be one of the funniest uses of brackets in history. How long before the Republicans ban parentheses?

If you are not a migrant in the UK, you may not know that we have to calculate the amount of days we spend outside of the UK in order to apply for citizenship. This is me atm trying to do it, and seeing whether (and when) I can plan on seeing my family abroad.

Government as market manipulation.

Currently reading a book about the relationship between King James I and his favourite the Duke of Buckingham. It is making me think monarchical court politics might provide quite a good lens for thinking about the Trump administration.

New article out! 🥳 We study whether & how internal political efficacy contributes to unequal turnout among newly enfranchised citizens - open access with Politics & Governance. 🙏 for the great cooperation to @aleininger.bsky.social, @wahlforschung.thorstenfaas.de, Sigrid Roßteutscher, Armin Schäfer!

How can creativity, arts and play help make democracy more inclusive? Our scoping review shows how arts-based methods are used to build solidarity and collective action for social change, but it also highlights key challenges. Read our latest blog. www.inspiredemocracy.eu/post/creativ...

People often say they don't trust politicians, experts, and so on. And yet they continue to vote, get on aeroplanes, etc. What's going on? Maybe they don’t really mean it. But maybe they do not have sufficient warrant for trust. And choose to act as-if they trust. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

David Miliband always was a snappy dresser. The long sojourn in America seems to have aged him horribly though.
