‘Cybertruck Man’ a cartoon in defiance of Musk #political #cartoonist #cybertruck #elon #musk #democracy #tiananmen

I am keeping a diary of daily events, as they unfold open.substack.com/pub/adamprze... It is available to everyone. I am new to Substack, so please let me know if something is wrong with the link or the file.

"We need to take a step back and realize that the GOP has become an authoritarian political party. It's either on board with authoritarianism or completely willing to tolerate it." On the pod, Steve Levitsky is highly Illuminating on our slide into autocracy: newrepublic.com/article/1915...

This is the one article to read on contemporary (and future) U.S. politics. Laid out analytically and clearly. There is a hint of optimism (which I do not share but do appreciate).

"If Trump, Musk and their allies [...] succeed, then the question of American politics won’t be if they’ll win the next election, but whether the Constitution as we know it is still in effect." www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/o...

MAGA Feeding Frenzy Has Caused a Constitutional Crisis   The assault is coming from different angles: Project 2025. The feudal tech barons. The America First nativists. It’s not a single master plan – it’s comprehensive chaos. Some thoughts from my new piece: 🧵

If there’s one lesson to take from the Polish case, it’s that an executive which is determined to create facts on the ground that create their own path dependencies will do so, and the consequences will be extremely difficult to unwind legally, even if the initial act was illegal.

👇 Proof that populists like Trump always outdo satirists: I drew this cartoon for Arte TV @artefr.bsky.social on January 18th…

Fascinating paper on where 6000 global elites went to college. Billionaires, CEOs, heads of state, central bankers, etc. In a word: Harvard. Fully 10% of global elites went to Harvard. Elite US schools are over-represented (23% IvyPlus), but nobody comes close to Harvard. 🧵

APSR will start inviting replications for a random subset of accepted papers. I really like this as well as the constructive tone around it 👏 (from the latest Notes from the Editors)

🇬🇧🇪🇺 Published Today in EJPR 🇬🇧🇪🇺 @simonhix.bsky.social @juhoharkonen.bsky.social and I find that 1/3 of the anti-Brexit shift in the UK can be attributed to the impact of cohort replacement (old voters dying, young people becoming eligible to vote)! 1/12 ejpr.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

I was invited to speak about the upcoming Trump era and share some lessons and optimism. I declined politely. After more than 25 years of researching the far right, I have no more (new) lessons and optimism to share.

A blog post on our working paper "Quality not quantity: how a VAA affected voting behavior in three large-scale field experiments", with @fresejoris.bsky.social and @simonhix.bsky.social. VAAs do not increase vote switching, turnout, or knowledge. But they improve the quality of vote switching

Following our colleague André Freire’s sudden passing, the editors at @sespjournal.bsky.social , namely Bonnie Field and Nicoló Conti had a touching idea: to prepare a special collection of André’s articles with the Journal. A nice way to pay tribute to his work: www.tandfonline.com/journals/fse...

Now published in PNAS! We had a survey in the field at the time of the first assassination attempt on Trump. We found that Rs became significantly less supportive of partisan violence and had increased in-party affect. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

“Hungary’s key lesson is you don’t protect democracy by talking about democracy — you protect democracy by protecting people. Only a democracy that works for the people is sustainable.”

Just built a Shiny app for my Research Design course! It visualizes how regression coefficient p-values depend on coefficient size, standard errors, and degrees of freedom. I post it here in case others find it useful: acanalejo.shinyapps.io/12_session12/

Do changes in wealth shape voting preferences? We explored this question using an 11 year panel study in🇬🇧 We find no evidence that an increase in assets leads to greater support for the Conservatives New paper with Justin Robinson & @sofiavasilopoulou.bsky.social accepted @bjpols.bsky.social

After spending last week with this amazing group during the CERIUM-FMSH Summer School on Democratic Decline and Resilience (organised w @rlachat.bsky.social ), I know for a fact that the future of political science research is bright!

Free access to our paper "Alternatives to plurality rule for single-winner elections: When do they make a difference?", with Jean-François Laslier, forthcoming in the European Journal of Political Economy 👇 authors.elsevier.com/a/1iZqSe52Oz...

New article with Jean-François Laslier in the European Journal of Political Economy. We simulate outcomes of 10 electoral rules, based on CSES data. FPTP is an outlier: more likely to diverge from other rules, more likely to select a winner that is ideologically distant from the Condorcet Winner

Can illiberals be democrats? How do they fare in Europe? 🎙️In this interview recorded w/ CEU's Review of Democracy, Cas Mudde @universityofga.bsky.social & @veghzsuzsanna.bsky.social (GMF) discuss illiberalism, democracy & the far right in Europe. 🎧💻Listen & read 👇 www.authlib.eu/interview-ca...
