The Vices played a sold out main stage @DoornroosjeNijmegen tonight! Second time I saw them and they put on a great show (again). The final 20 minutes were ON FIRE but what came before was a wonderful build up to that climax. How long until they’re in AFAS?

Ivan & The Parazol suppored The Vices @DoornroosjeNijmegen tonight. Hailing from Budapest, they mostly (strangely) reminded me of Dutch 80s pop bands Toontje Lager and Goede Doel. Also bit Hall & Oates but in higher registers the pretty charismatic singer sounded really like InXs’s Michael Hutchence

Perhaps if Amnesiac-era Radiohead attempt to play Liege & Lief live, they’d sound vaguely like Tunng (probably not). Tunng finished an excellent gig @EkkoUtrecht just now. Unlike any other band (well, maybe Four Tet), they combine folk/electronics to astonishing effect. Never saw them before, nice!

Wonderful set by Dana Gavanski, opening for Tunng @EkkoUtrecht tonight. Heartfelt piano songs with sad lyrics, beautifully rendered in a voice with a pretty wide range. Though obviously British (‘with Serbian roots’), clearest references were Lana del Rey, Joanna Newsom, Judee Sill, and Soap&Skin

Dear Volodymyr Zelenskyy, dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone.

Verschrikkelijk.

Daniel Lanois played @StAnns&HolyTrinityNewYork solo tonight. Alternating between pedal steel and electronic soundscapes, his wonderful performance was augmented by the beautiful church interior and incredible color visuals by Eric Epstein. Awesome show!

YAI opened for Daniel Lanois @StAnns&HolyTrinityNewYork tonight. Just a percussionist and a woodwind player (?) cum pianist, they brought a beautiful ambient form of jazz to this magnificent church. The light projections on the walls, windows and ceiling added a whole extra dimension. Excellent gig!

My fellow countrymen The Vices happened to play @DC9Washington so I gave it a shot. Pretty catchy songs overall, in the vein of The Strokes, Dandy Warhols and a bit of Fatal Flowers if you grew up in 80s Netherlands. Enthusiastic audience, nice gig guys!

Saw only the last four songs of Trophy Wife (opening for The Vices @DC9Washington) earlier tonight. Hard to get a good impression (also because of the loud talking audience) but it all sounded pretty emotional. Impressive front woman in any case …

Daryll-Ann played a very nice set @EffenaarEindhoven tonight. More than 30 years since I last saw them at the Pinkpop festival! They brought a great mix of (esp.) older and newer work, excellent sound and harmonies

The Hook played an energetic support show for Daryll-Ann @EffenaarEindhoven. Reminiscent of Buzzcocks and Ramones era punk, they were pretty entertaining for a young three-piece from Utrecht

Always a joy to hear Lisa Gerrard’s voice! Tonight @TivoliVredenburgUtrecht (Grote Zaal) she was accompanied by Jules Maxwell, who also played solo before the break. Didn’t know the album they performed live, but it was a beautiful rendition. Did miss Dead Can Dance’s rhythmicity & urgency though!

Gotta admit that REM’s Good Advices made my day, but The Yearlings’ afternoon gig @WillemTweeDenBosch had more than enough to offer on its own. Hadn’t heard their music before but they played close2home so I gave it a shot. Closest comparison was Jayhawks, which says all about their excellent songs

Turmoil opened for The Yearlings @WillemTweeDenBosch and it worked pretty well for a Sunday afternoon. My most obvious reference was Fatal Flowers, including the singer’s dark eyes. That would make them retro-retro though, which wouldn’t do justice to the beautiful harmonies and nifty bass playing

Rufus Wainwright had a rough start with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra @DoelenRotterdam but made up for it after the break. We’ll blame it on jet lag, fires, new administration, never mind, what counts is that most of these songs (that I hadn’t heard before except the encore) touched the heart

First time I saw The Brian Jonestown Massacre (@013Tilburg) and, while perhaps this is how they do it, it felt like they were in the rehearsal room. Lots of chaos between songs, nothing said to the audience until 70 mins in, played 95 mins in what was announced as a 2-hr show. Maybe not their night?

Les Big Byrd are from Stockholm and they opened for The Brian Jonestown Massacre @013Tilburg tonight. Pretty nice sound overall, esp. when they went spacey, but not all songs were good and the singing left a lot to be desired. Last song sorta saved the set for me

Over 2-hour show from DeWolff @EffenaarEindhoven, not sure if it’s even finished (had to catch a train). Must have seen them 10 times now and they’re always different & always professional. Pablo’s commercial break was wáy too long but he redeemed himself by climbing on the bar (only about 12” away)

Heath opened for a sold-out DeWolff show @EffenaarEindhoven tonight. Interesting five-piece with a singer who used the mouth harp more than his (strangely high-pitched) voice. Loved their Soft Parade-ish rhythms too. Great guitar from both players too, and no keys! One of a kind, as they say
