Change

With each new confirmation, the Republicans have been slowly moving across the Rubicon. Today, they finally went all the way across. No going back.

Remember, every accusation is either an admission or the outline of a plan.

Notice to everyone: I have determined that I am saving my country. It is official. Now… I have things to do.

The only way I can make sense of what is happening in Europe is to assume that Trump, Putin, and Xi are negotiating for “spheres of influence.” The US gets the Western Hemisphere, Russia gets Europe, and China gets Asia. Africa parceled up for maximum extraction. SW Asia to be fought over later.

I grew up with people like JD Vance in the church I was compelled to attend. Lacking self-awareness and self-control, they used religion as a cudgel and drowned out dissent with hubris. The stench of their self-righteousness continues to ascend like a blasphemous prayer.

I get it now. White collar crime is simply no longer criminal. Only “dangerous” people can be charged with a crime.

Of all the crazy shit over the past 3 weeks, the one I cannot wrap my head around is his obsession with Canada. Don’t get me wrong, Canada is awesome and Canadians are amazing folks (there are, of course, exceptions). But what is going on here? Can anyone help me understand?

They are all bad. All of them. Every. Single. One. But Kennedy. That is vile at an entire different level.

At this point, it appears the majority in Congress does not have a legislative agenda.Obviously, they do not need one. Everything they want has not been handed off to others to “make happen.” As a former local elected official I find it disgusting and cowardly.

I have read "The Economist" for decades, and while they are far too bound to market orthodoxy for me, I value their straightforward style and excellent writing. They are not known for hyperbole. So when they say this: "Elon Musk is shredding America’s government," I sit up and take note

Folks whose neighborhoods in SoCal, should just not go back. Perhaps we can ask Mexico to take them. Also, those whose homes were devasted in NC and TN, should also move on. Too hard to rebuild. Maybe Canada? UK? Not sure, but we should ask someone to take them. Devastation was just too much.

“Despite the goods trade deficit, Canadians spend significantly more per capita on U.S. products. In 2022, the average American purchased roughly $1,443 worth of Canadian goods and services, while the average Canadian spent just over $10,800 on U.S. goods and services—648% more.” Real Clear Markets

I am wondering…

People with (lots of) money also are typically awash in time. They have lots of it because they have overcome the hard work of making ends meet. They have theirs and they can buy other people’s time. This allows them to develop the “long game” and implement tactics to further enrich themselves.

To my many Canadian and Mexican friends. I am genuinely sorry for what is happening. All I can say is that I did not vote for the bastard, but that does not make you or me feel any better.

Oh, this is so good, and so right:

I’m tempted to see these discrete actions—as bizarre and disconnected as they all seem—to be leading to some master design that will be revealed in time. But, in fact, this is a power grab/grift by many different people with no shared goals. There is no “end game.” There is only chaos.

Thoughts for a Friday evening.

Is it an overstatement to say that the attack on DEI—amorphous as it is—is really repackaged eugenics? Look at what gets lumped into DEI and answer for yourself. Trump et al seem bent on some kind of purification ritual.

Okay, let’s go there: what was the racial and gender composition of those proximally involved in the crash: plane pilots, helicopter pilots, air traffic controllers. THEN, let’s have a conversation about their experience. THEN, if Trump wants to trash these people—some of whom are dead, go for it.

For reasons, I don’t understand it appears that republican AG’s are not supporting a lawsuit to stop the freeze. Why don’t we have an opt out freeze? States that want the freeze can have it and states that don’t can opt out. The savings should still be enough to reduce the federal deficit.

Is it just me, or does it feel like no one is doing anything, and everyone is waiting for someone else to do something? Related question: Don't average citizens have "standing" to bring lawsuits against this piece-by-piece coup?

Hey, these guys all LOVE “disruption,” right?

As a former Christian (yes, you can opt out), and someone who knows A LOT about the teachings of Jesus (from whom Christians take their name), I feel qualified to call it: Graham, the other “court evangelicals”, and all those attacking Bishop Budde, are not Christians. They have no king but Trump.

In our new world order, if Trump says something—anything—about policy or elections, or 3rd terms, or FEMA or, literally ANYTHING, someone is going to advance it as policy, or legislation, or EO, or constitutional amendment. Or, Trump will just do it and then we will debate whether it is legal.

That’s right WE are offering mutual aid to the federal government. You are very welcome. Firefighters from my mall town of 70k have been helping. That’s right, our support to you, Federal Gov., comes from every corner of our state.

Looking at you right now, George W. This was your baby, right? Your thoughts? "Notably absent from the waivers approved so far are critical global health programs such as PEPFAR, the U.S. flagship global HIV program."

Johnson is absolutely correct—the Reverend’s ideas are radical. Merriam-Webster definition of radical: “relating to, or proceeding from a root.” Her words are rooted in the Sermon on the Mount. They are rooted in the teaching of Jesus. Spot on Speaker!

Growing up in the Bible Belt, we were told the horrors of the “Jefferson Bible.” That is the one where Thomas Jefferson took knife and glue to the Bible to excise the miracles. Now, we have the MAGA Bible. They have taken knife and glue to excise mercy, care of neighbor, and love of enemy.

Here’s the thing, she did not “call him out.” She “called him in.” She invited him into a place of mercy giving. She extended grace to him, thereby displaying the mercy she requested. Read her words.

Rev. Budde’s appeal to “have mercy” is especially poignant—and damning—in light of the pardons of the past 48 hours. Her appeal boils down to this: “Mr. President, I ask you to make the most vulnerable in our communities human.”

A lot of fascistic “red meat” has been tossed out in the EOs. But there are a few that are simply dangerous. Ending external communication from the nation’s health agencies is first on that list. What is the “end” they are trying to achieve here? Insane. Pathogens are immune to political viewpoints.

I was the mayor of my small city when Trump took office the first time. I feel today like I felt then. There is much work to do in our nearby. Local decision-making is always constrained by funding decisions, policies, and statutes that are made at the state and federal levels. 1/4

David Brooks: “But I don’t think I appreciated how much our system of government depends on unspoken norms.” Yes, but… Trump also does illegal things and now has SCOTUS sanction to do so. Loss of norms? Maybe. Breakdown of the rule of law? Definitely.

Well, Tom Brady really won me over tonight. Incisive, engaged, clearly having fun—loving the game. He was on top of the plays and called a few in advance. Great job.
