Great time speaking at the emagazine Conference for A Level Language today in London - a brilliant engaged audience of over 800 English Language students. Thanks for inviting me @engmediacentre.bsky.social

New work suggests that 'cold spots' are developing in the study of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences in the UK: wonkhe.com/blogs/there-...

Here we go! The start of emagazine A Level Language Conference.

The @engmediacentre.bsky.social team registering students for the emagazine A Level conference in Euston. A cracking line-up of speakers & a full-house of students.

We have a responsibility to tell students the truth about careers & to point out some of the misinformation around. An English degree can lead to all kinds of things, not least careers in tech companies, health & other 'scientific' spheres, in much-needed roles other than technical & scientific.

🔗 Useful link 🔗 This video by Dr Robbie Love from Aston University is a great way to introduce how word meanings change and how these changes are tracked. Could be useful to spark a dicussion with A Level English Language students. 🐝 Find it here: https://buff.ly/4hzlUWJ #Litdrive #TeamEnglish

The first known use of singular “they” is so old that not only does it pre-date singular “you,” it wasn’t even spelled with a “th” When William and the Werewolf, in 1375 CE, used singular “they,” it was spelled with a Thorn

Does anyone happen to know of work in #corpuslinguistics #digitalhumanities etc. that critically reflects on textuality? In particular, corpus tools usually enforce a static and immutable notion of text, which is then the basis for dispersion measures, topic models, etc. Any pointers appreciated!

My CUP element is finally out! 🙌 You can download it for free for a couple of weeks. Will soon post some reflections available in the book!
