Very happy to have my book categorised in the Humour section of The Bookseller reviews 😃

The word 'oracy' has suddenly become prominent in education. It was coined in 1965 by Andrew Wilkinson. He believed the skill of speaking/listening needed a word to show it was as important as literacy and numeracy. Reminds me of an old quote: "How can I know what I think till I hear what I say?"

Teachers! Four Year 9/10 shows this summer: * 'A Magical Game Show' in EXETER (18th June) and BIRMINGHAM (10th July) with Ben Sparks @sparksmaths.bsky.social * 'Much Ado About Numbers' in NEWCASTLE (1st July) and DULWICH (11th July) with Rob Eastaway @robeastaway.bsky.social

Regardless of financial pressures, the government's decision to make massive cuts to the Advanced Maths Support Programme (AMSP) on 1st April - part way through the school year - is misguided and wasteful. An effective national network has been disbanded with minimal time to make plans. Shocking.

@myf1990.bsky.social keen to discuss possible article with you, what's the best way to get in touch?

📢 Another brilliant #MathsConf37 workshop announcement! 🏛️🔢 What Did The Roman (Numerals) Ever Do For Us? 🤔 This one will be run by @robeastaway.bsky.social 👉 Learn more about this workshop and book your ticket here: completemaths.com/community/ma...

Today I discovered that the majority of UK property lawyers use "square feet" as their unit of area, even though the RICS recommends "square metres". One youngish lawyer told me he didn't know hectare is a metric unit. The UK is still remarkably un-metric. robeastaway.com/blog/inching #CoreMaths

Are you a primary school that would like to put together a parent cricket team this summer, to encourage social networks? Or a cricket club that would like to attract new adult players? Generous funding available to help make it happen.

Looking forward to returning to Sheffield on the Ides of March [i.e. the 15th] for #mathsconf37. My workshop is "What did the (Roman) numerals do for us?" completemaths.com/community/ma...

For some reason the YouTube algorithm didn't seem to like this video so much n 2023, or maybe the sport/maths crossover audience is smaller than other nerd options... but I still like this problem - where should you take your rugby conversion kick from? youtu.be/rHdYv62F5fs?...

I just discovered a flaw in "I cut you choose" as a fair-allocation strategy for cake. This evening two of my offspring couldn't agree on who gets to cut and who gets to choose...

Thrilled to be doing the closing keynote at the joint conference this Easter. The title of my talk is "You too can be a maths genius", inspired by a TV exchange between @bobbyseagull.bsky.social and comedian Tom Allen. Thanks Bobby!

In the 16th century, northern Europe made the switch from Roman numerals to Indo Arabic numerals. Sometimes things went wrong! My latest blog (part of the talk I did for @histassoc.bsky.social today) robeastaway.com/blog/boethiu...

The rules for writing Roman numerals have been flexible through history. In William The Conqueror's Domesday Book, 4 is always written as IIII (never as IV), but 9 is sometimes written as IX and sometimes VIIII and the I's are sometimes written above to squeeze them in. The no.s below are 9,10,11.

1st completed book of the year and really enjoyed this. A lovely book that looks at what Maths meant and looked like in Shakespeare' England. Thoroughly recommend. Thanks @robeastaway.bsky.social #MathsToday #MathsTeachers #Booksky #Books #History

In case you aren't in the extensive maths-nerd bubble, here are some nice number properties of 2025 that "everyone" is talking about: * 2025 is a square number (45^2), the only square year most of us will live through * 45=20+25, so (20+25)^2 = 2025 * 1^3+2^3+3^3+4^3+5^3+6^3+7^3+8^3+9^3 = 2025
