Sometimes in Seattle you travel alone.

Researchers at Fred Hutch Cancer Center have discovered an overlooked mechanism driving aggressive breast and brain tumors.

This is now the United States of America kills a democracy.

A photo challenge I face at work is I often don’t know how my pictures will be used. That has pushed me to develop a style that solves for usage variables. My default recipe is a well-lit face with a meaningful out-of-focus background. The trick is to suggest a place without distracting detail.

Some songs dig in and stay.

Medicaid is not for sale. NASA is not for sale. The Post Office is not for sale. America is not for sale. We have an obligation to resist kings. We outnumber them. And they can be overwhelmed.

This is where we are.

We all have a part in keeping the dream alive.

Be careful out there.

Sometimes in Seattle viewership is down.

R U wondering what you can do? Join the nationwide, big business boycott on Feb 28. On that day, DON’T BUY ANYTHING. It’s time to send the message to the oligarchs. People are awakening. Together, we hit where it hurts them.

Making egg theft great again

I recently got to interview the boss. Dr. Thomas J. Lynch Jr. became the Fred Hutch CEO right before COVID-19 hit. In response to the pandemic, Lynch pivoted to communicating to the organization via video storytelling, and sometimes I get to work with him.

He is going after our kids' futures. It's time to protest. I understand border security and illegal drug concerns. There are ways to deal with those things. However, his solutions for those issues are simplistic made-for-TV tactics. The rest of his agenda is a profound overreach. None of it is OK!

“This fellowship is among just a handful that puts the postdoc squarely in charge of their own destiny,” Malik said. “Having such a long period of support can encourage talented scientists like Grant to think of long-term success rather than short term goals.

I had a unique challenge here. Our story is about a mom who had to delay having her second child because of the treatment she was going through. So, the photo needed to involve the kids, but Courtney didn’t want me to show their faces.

Sometimes I write at Fred Hutch. I started our Heart of the Hutch series during the pandemic to talk about essential workers. The scope expanded, and it grew into a popular feature. This story about Miheret is as much about the sacrifices of motherhood as it is about her specific work.

As a photographer, how do you signal that a researcher works with low temperatures? I put a blue gel on my background light. The foreground/background color contrast can help.

My challenge when photographing at Fred Hutch is that the lab work looks the same. So, I often make an environmental portrait of the researcher. The interesting part is to find a meaningful and interesting background. Texture, color, and composition should compliment the story without overwhelming.

When Fred Hutch hired me, my soon-to-be-boss said, "We're just going to tell stories, but through a cancer lens", and that's what I've done ever since.

Some photo shoots at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center are more difficult than others. Photographing chemical biologist Behnam Nabet in his lab got complicated when he turned off the regular lights and switched on the red.
