fun fact three fighter jets is roughly equivalent to the NEA’s 2024 budget

My new social media policy is that for any negative thing I post/re-tweet, I post a nice thing. Say hello to my new celosia plant.

The devastating, shortsighted attack on literature continues. List from Magic City Books. Who'd they miss? Note: the small publishers selected here for financial attack include (among other very worthy and important presses) @transitbooks.bsky.social, publisher of 2023 Nobel laureate Jon Fosse.

1/ a) The coconut thingy was great, even a week later. I drank the water, then blended it w/ milk & yogurt. b) I don't get out much, but I love the serendipity of encounters like those. c) Here's the editing journey of the photo. I think it's fascinating that my phone watermarked it as AI.

Stopped for gas in northern Virginia & saw some ppl selling chopped fruit in the parking lot. Reminds me of my parents' stories about getting fresh coconuts in HI: some duded climbed the tree, chopped the coconut's top off, then stuck in a straw.

Speaking generally: I do think it can be useful, for both readers and writers, to interrogate *why* one started and completed any project. For ex., in poetry, sometimes you need to abandon the original artistic impulse that inspired the piece. Metaphor teachers use = the bay leaf in cooking.

See: John Updike's unnecessarily catty but wonderfully eloquent response to readers demanding that he explain "what he meant" when he wrote his stories. I teach the whole essay in undergrad lit courses. I wish more people taught it.

This is (prob) my only political post for 25. Yes, social media wants us to howl @ every shiny new distraction, but if you want to win elections, stay focused. Consistent messaging. Voters we need to win do NOT care abt mockery & partisan bickering. They care abt jobs & groceries & quality of life.

okay this is an emergency assistance thread for anyone who got this National Endowment for the Arts email today some of you can still get your money and I’m going to tell you how article to come later this weekend but here is the Cliffs Notes version:

🚨Report your NSF grant terminations! 🚨 We are starting to collect information on NSF grant terminations to create a shared resource as we have for NIH. The more information we collect, the more we can organize, advocate, and fight back! Please share widely! airtable.com/appGKlSVeXni...

If we cannot stop these cuts, anyone w/ a platform must make it clear, loudly and repeatedly, who is responsible for the pain in this country. That may be the only thing to sway voters, esp low-information and apathetic voters. Be specific and provide sources. Compare life in 2023 versus now.

I relied heavily on LIHEAP in the years after college when the only apartments I could afford were drafty & poorly insulated. Cutting this program will mean more sick & poor ppl, many of whom will be your teachers, nurses, waitresses, etc.

I have a book coming out in October! So definitely planning to be at AWP2026. Keep me in mind for your panels on comics, fiction, essays, imposter syndrome, wasting time on the internet, feminism, hopping genres, parenting, The Muppets, internet hate, hamsters, etc.

Today is the final day to submit to the AHP Nonfiction Prize! Send us your work before midnight ET!

I am ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT for this one.

Close but no cigar on this one for my debut novel. (Three to four major mistakes, and way too much vagueness.)

Although I do my best to avoid A**z*n, it's the easiest & best way to find a sample of the book. It is weird (and backwards and possibly ruinous) that publishers' websites don't provide brief excerpts or samples. I guess maybe that task falls on the author & they can do it on their own website? But

Today is independent bookstore day. Go shop at an old-fashioned, bricks and mortar bookstore. Your soul will thank you. Attaching photos of some of my PGH favorites: White Whale Books, Riverstone, City Books, Bottom Feeder, Stay Gold Books, and City of Asylum.

Fellow authors, I love you, and I know it feels like we don’t have a choice, but B&N and Am*zon both scheduled sales this week to preempt Independent Bookstore Day, a hugely vital source of income for indie bookstores. Please don’t promote their sales; please promote your local indie this week.

Great news here! I'm not reading anything about s2 of #Andor so I can go in fresh, but I'm so glad to hear it. @devindra.bsky.social has good taste. I trust him on this.
