This is one of if not the flagship ethnomusicology and folklore programs in North America and poof it’s gone

This is all kinds of awful in my home state

Didn’t get a pick but AG James had Mamdani walking with her at NYC Pride and a WAY better DJ than Adams or Hochul

Sometime when I don’t have three books in process I’ll write about how Milk Street’s podcast presents itself as being explicitly philosophical, but it is the most boring-ass “philosophy” ever whereas ATK actually exhibits a working philosophy wo crowing about that’s on the cutting edge of the field

The US Supreme Court’s whole “no laws, just (religious) belief” is the same sort of thinking behind “no WMD, just vibes” and AI. Just subjective intuition or view, no indexing to a standard, corresponding truth, whatevs.

It may be because I am a philosopher but tbh I find signposting like "this book's main claim is" or "I argue" to be helpful rather than redundant (especially in cases where the piece does/argues something different than what it SAYS it argues...which happens a lot!)

As someone who taught at UNC Charlotte for 15 years the failsons came to us after they were kicked out of Chapel Hill for you know failing and were outsmarted by everyone in class at this supposedly inferior institution

I have to be away for 5 days for AEJMC and the hotel is dog friendly so...maybe I will bring Juno along? It's SF in August so the weather should be nice?

In the vibes book I talk about how demonization (in @adamkotsko.bsky.social's technical sense) and criminalization are the main ways vibes are policed - we check ppl not for what they do, but for who they are. In this case ZM is Muslim, he's oriented to the working class aka "a socialist" etc etc

making last round of revisions to Good Vibes Only & realized that though this is my first project very explicitly about phenomenology I never needed to like go do a big deep dive in the primary literature because I was effectively immersed in it from 96-06 (BA-PhD)

And then this shit just came out. When you’re making over $700k a year, gaining $12k is nothing. It’s a nice vacation, redoing the garage, giving a niece/nephew a car. When you’re making $23k a year, losing $1600 is “are we paying for food or for the house or for medical bills” territory.

A question I often ask at work re:new AI products and services is “was there any market research to see what sort of customer demand there might be for this type of thing?”

“music for people who like how music sounds, but not for people who like music” seems like exactly how Spotify wants lean-back listeners to think about music

Touched the Pacific Ocean for the first time (feet right), walked from Santa Monica Pier to Venice Pier

Alt rock radio 96-07ish actively narrowcast to white men by programming music and DJ banter that gave voice to the idea that white men were victims of feminist henpecking, “PC” culture, and “reverse discrimination”. It was literally the FM compliment to Rush on AM.

FORM MATTERS This hard/easy crap that people are rightly parodying is content hegemony, the idea that what is expressed matters more than how it is expressed (as though the how doesn’t shape the what)

A hill I will die on is that they also need to be reading whole books that aren’t novels. All French high schoolers read Descartes’ Meditations, for example. All American 12th graders should read Souls of Black folk or Nickeled and Dimed for example.

20th anniversary date night last night

Please I would rather have a new Peaches album than homonationalism 2.0 the reactionary remix

The difference between sending Colin Powell to the UN with ‘evidence’ of WMD and today is nobody even needs made-up facts (thanks AI), just vibes suffices apparently

Americans do not want war.

Sitting at the hotel pool while Grace Jones’ cover of “Me, I Disconnect From You” comes on the PA

This is exactly the effect Auto-Tune had on the perception of singing labor: men singers’ use signaled virtuosity, whereas it exacerbated the stereotype that womens’ singing labor was primarily emotional online.ucpress.edu/jpms/article...

Also the county JD is from

Butler County OH has had one of the most anti-immigration Joe Arpaio-wannabe sheriffs for the last 20+ years

Arendt is actually conservative and (not unlike Nussbaum) kind of just an Aristotelian in 20th c terms www.pbs.org/wnet/america...

These are great opportunities for popular music scholars to develop their editorial chops and make connections across the field. I *loved* commissioning Field Notes content.

I think a lot of people's fears of urban life are fed by the luxury belief that violence is about stranger danger and dark alleyways when it's more often about family and poverty. Any woman could get on the rankest subway car at 1 a.m. and statistically be safer than they are at home
