Kagemusha (1980, d. A. Kurosawa) A thief and murderer, set to be crucified, accepts the role as double for a Lord in wartorn 1500’s Japan. When the Lord is shot his role becomes more critical and beautiful. Epic samurai film from the only man who could have shot it.

Gattaca (1997, d. Niccol) Ethan Hawke stars in this excellent for an hour and half for so film that goes at least twelve minutes too long. In a society that overanalyzes potential births, he is born naturally and disregarded. 1/3

Ley Lines (1999, d. Miike) My first thought at the end of this, directed at Miike, was “You dark bastard.” This was, of course, complimentary. The film is a fairly traditional Asian crime film – three Japanese young men go to China for adventure, become low level gangsters – 1/2

Desperate Living (1977, d. Waters) Mink Stole and Jean Hill murder Mink’s husband and they escape to Mortville, ruled by evil queen Edith Massey. Stole is insane and eventually kisses up to the queen. A disgusting and quite funny comedy.

Visitor Q (2001, d. Miike) Sexual-psycho movie from Miike. It starts with a girl teasing a man into sex, and paying for it, moves on to a boy beating the hell out of his mom and in turn being abused by a gang of youths. His dad films the abuse and is involved with a young woman; meantime, 1/2

With Trump in charge, this is now National Bleak History Month.

Imprint (2005, d. Miike) A brilliantly creepy horror flick from Miike. Billy Drago gives an over-the-top performance as an American journalist who returns to Japan, seeking his prostitute girlfriend. 1/2

The Bitter Stems (1956, d. Ayala) Excellent Argentine noir as Gasper, a dissatisfied newspaperman, joins with opportunist Liudas to swindle the masses with a correspondence school for journalists. They make money, Liudas confides that he wants to bring his family over from Europe, 1/2?

Saw Will and Coleton of Kentucky Mule at the Crepe Place bar today. Asked them about the location and time of their latest EP cover. (It's out front at the Crepe Place, and it's clearly a Halloween shot.) Anyway, here's the opening number. I love this band. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUsQ...

Letters went out to federal workers this morning stating they were fired due to poor performance. However, all employees had been rated as “exceptional” performers by their supervisors. Please keep these records and pursue wrongful termination claims. Let the lawsuits begin.

Me in 1999: “That South Park movie was wacky, imagining an American imperialism so deranged that they decide to invade Canada in a crusade of censorship. 😂” Me in 2025: 😐

Raging creek, from a few days ago. Where's the ducks?

Can't imagine why this Berkeley launderette closed.

Recent photo; I think she's stopped aging.

Dear Democratic Party: why are you not screaming this from every rooftop? Why are you not holding press conferences with these poor fired people - putting a face on what the richest man is destroying?

Preorder for the new Tom Rollins, Trigger Point, is now LIVE!

As ‘Never Whistle at Night’ enters its 72nd week on the Indie Bestseller List—each week since release—Ted and I can’t help but be amazed at the continued support for this groundbreaking project. NWAN is nothing without its writers. Much love. NeverWhistleAtNight.com

La Jetee (1963, d. Marker) A series of stunning stills tells this brilliant and influential science fiction story from photographer Chris Marker. After a major war, a man is told that there is no future that humans can survive, 1/2

This energy.

Kanopy emailed me that Freaks n Geeks was available. First two episodes rewatched, great.

Babysitting our friend's special ed son, I asked him why his pants were wet. "I'm a spider," he said. "Okay," I said, "So, why are the spider's pants wet?" "I climbed up the water spout."

The whiskey bottle was in his hand, and he lifted it, holding it up before his eyes. Do I want some of this? Do I want another drink? Suddenly it was very important to know. If he did not want a drink, he did not want anything. If he did not want anything, he might as well die. 1/2

Absolutely. Grind it to a halt.

Crockett: "If feels as if y'all have just decided that y'all are gonna castrate your constitutional duty & hand it over to someone who was unelected. It doesn't matter how many cheerleaders he had on the field campaigning for him. That doesn't mean he gets to go in and sit atop any of our agencies"

Anatomy of Hell (2004, d. Breillat) A woman tries to kill herself. When she is saved, she invites her good Samaritan to watch her. He will be paid. The woman spends the bulk of the rest of the film naked, seducing this man who purports to hate women. 1/2

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975, d. Forman) These days this film, which I loved when it came out, is most notable to me for containing in its cast two actors who were later in Taxi: Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd. 1/2

It's so easy to get a gun around here and so hard to get a sap, which hardly seems right. I mean, the maximum penalty for murder is death; the maximum for causing a concussion is 15 yards and ejection, right?

Murphy: "This is a constitutional crisis that we are in today. Let's call it what it is."
