We are hiring an intern in the UK news team at Nature - a fantastic opportunity for any budding science journo! 6 months of on-the-job training, London based but partly remote, pays living wage. Apply by 28 Feb: springernature.wd3.myworkdayjobs.com/de-DE/Spring...

Now almost 450 signatories to my open letter calling on the @royalsociety.org to stand up for its values & deal with the widespread concerns raised by Elon Musk's Fellowship. Please consider signing & sharing: forms.gle/miDciq35oxyw... List of signatories here: occamstypewriter.org/scurry/2025/...

Our February issue is now live! www.nature.com/natecolevol/... Featuring: 🌴 the state of living plant collections 🍃 ethical sampling of herbaria, 💀 hominin population structure, 🌻 genomic divergence in sunflowers

Ex situ plant collections are, quite frankly, the business. Still haven’t gotten over seeing the Svalbard seed vault rising from the permafrost in 2018 looking almost as atmospheric as the picture in this editorial. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

To commemorate the #Taung centenary, a special issue of the SAJS came out today! We present a collection of articles looking at aspects of the #history, #anatomy, #geology, #community and -#museum curation of the #Taung child in this post colonial era 🙌🏽 Link here 👇🏽👇🏽 sajs.co.za/index

We’re delighted that our latest paper on the world’s living plant collections has now been published. You can find it here: www.nature.com/articles/s41... @roinnanluisigh.bsky.social @natureecoevo.bsky.social Grateful for the exclusive by @donnalferguson.bsky.social, here: shorturl.at/GnYIQ

Examining capacities and constraints within living plant collections: Cano et al. collate a meta-collection of ex situ living plant diversity held in 50 botanical collections worldwide, spanning a century of data and currently containing ~500,000 accessions www.nature.com/articles/s41...

All I'm saying, @royalsociety.org, is that your one of your Fellows giving Nazi salutes is never going to be a good look for you.

#Bioinformatics background? @naturegenet.bsky.social is looking to hire a new editor. 🧪🧬https://springernature.wd3.myworkdayjobs.com/SpringerNatureCareers/job/Berlin/Associate-or-Senior-Editor--Nature-Genetics_JR101744

Here we go! The first issue of Nature Reviews Biodiversity is now live🥳🎉🥂. Thank you to our authors, reviewers, and community for the support! We hope you enjoy the reading. www.nature.com/nrbd/volumes...

🚨🏺🍑 Nature Ecology & Evolution (@natureecoevo.bsky.social) chose our work tracking the spread of peaches through Indigenous networks as one of ten ecology papers published in 2024 to be included in their Year in Review set! www.nature.com/articles/s41... Original: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

MPs object to Observer transfer. At the time of writing 18 MPs had signed. Please check whether your MP is among them; congratulate them if so; and encourage them to join if not. 🙏 #savetheobserver @gonuj.org www.londonfreelance.org/fl/2501gmg-e...

I am done! See you in 2025

Paola Villa (1939-2024) had a wide view of prehistory and a passion for innovative collaboration. 🏺 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

They don't make @nature.com papers the same anymore Exhibit A: 'PHOTOGRAPHS OF A TUMBLING CAT', 1894 (www.nature.com/articles/051...) Includes this line: 'The expression of offended dignity shown by the cat at the end of the first series indicates a want of interest in scientific investigation' 🙀

"Contrary to common claims, long fragments interpreted as introgressed from Neanderthal can be detected without any actual Hn admixture, when models integrate spatial structure". cat, meet pigeons. www.nature.com/articles/s41... rdcu.be/d4g2N

I happened to read two things today at lunchtime that weren't linked, but each of which made me think about the other (and the nature of evidence and how we think about it) in an interesting way. 1/3

Vielen dank @emmadnn.bsky.social @taphonomist.bsky.social @rachelwarnock.bsky.social and @thepalass.bsky.social for my favourite PalAss yet, and not just because of the Brezeln/Christmas shopping opportunities. Just one more for the road…#PalAss24

How do we deal with the 11 billion tonnes of plastic we've created? Sarah Gabbott & colleagues (& some fetching purple polyester Y-fronts) have applied skills & techniques that palaeontologists use to understand fossilisation to better understand how plastics degrade in the environment #PalAss24

Now officially competing for the job of chief editor of Nature Fried Things (launching 2025) with @devinleaward.bsky.social after our visit to Erlangen’s multiple Christmas markets last night

I think I might aspire to be a sink when I grow up #PalAss24

I am now 99% Bretzel and enjoying day 2 at #palass24. Floating about sessions 1B and 2A this morning if you’d like to say hello!

Very excited to have made it to Erlangen in time for the excellent ECR-MCR @thepalass.bsky.social symposium on extinction. I will be identifiable today by my silver shoes (and my name badge…) if you want to catch me to chat about @natureecoevo.bsky.social #palass24

Hello! I'm Luíseach, an editor handling all the old things 🏺🦕🦴🧬 (but also live humans) @natureecoevo.bsky.social. My handle, Roinn an Luísigh, is a pun that I thought was funny 12 years ago because my name rhymes with 'taoiseach'. Puns work best when they're laboured and need explaining, right?

Hi #palaeontology people, I will be in Erlangen next week fronting for @natureecoevo.bsky.social, please drop me a message or an email (can be found on the NEE website) if you'd like to chat at #PalAss24 Bis nächste Woche, @thepalass.bsky.social!

NEW: the Scott Trust confirms sale of the Observer. RIP the Guardian. A total betrayal of the staff the organisation’s so-called ‘values’. This is a deal negotiated between 2 chums on a billionaire’s yacht: welcome to the the Guardian’s very own VIP lane

Our December editorial @natureecoevo.bsky.social is a very suitable topic for Bluesky's new era of kindness and decency in academic social media (we hope!). Let us do as Bill and Ted commanded, and be excellent to each other. www.nature.com/articles/s41... rdcu.be/d2Dm4

Support the digital picket! Don’t read/share Guardian stories during the #savetheobserver @gonuj.org #strike

Q: what’s unusual about today’s @guardian front page? (Answer below)

It’s a dark day for research in Aotearoa New Zealand and the ramifications for the country are huge. Minister Judith Collins has just announced our blue-skies funder will no longer fund humanities & social science research and that 50% of what is funded must have economic benefit.
