Absolutely

Mark Hamill posting rebellious content in a battle against a dictator and his robotic sidekick is the most Star Wars shit ever.

This is great! @nelial.bsky.social posted: Hey, BlueSky! You do NOT have to be a federal employee to reply with 5 bullet points of what you did last week! [email protected]

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

Bravo @plos.org! US exec orders "stand in direct conflict with our core values, our mission, edit policies" "PLOS will not compromise on issues of scientific rigor & editorial integrity... we seek diversity because more expert voices make for better science" theplosblog.plos.org/2025/02/plos...

“the United States is not a startup. The federal government exists to do all of the things that are definitionally not profitable, that serve the public good rather than protect investor profits. (The vast majority of startups also fail, something the United States cannot afford to do.)”

We are excited to announce a new faculty position here in Cambridge, for researchers in computational and/or theoretical biology, based jointly in Genetics and Mathematics. Come and join us! Happy to answer questions about research, teaching and working here. www.jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/50414/

I'm very proud of my organisation for showing clear leadership during these challenging days. "PLOS will always anchor our decisions in our values and our principles. And we will continue to speak up vocally for open, independent science."

Thanks to all of the NIHers and their friends who reached out to me. I am still here (DM me or Signal jeremymberg.78) I still have a very incomplete picture but based on what I have been told, the damage to NIH and to many wonderful people who work(ed) there is/was impossible for me to imagine 1/n

“Dr Mike Galsworthy, chairman of the European Movement UK, told The Independent: “This is welcome news. We need to start pulling this country out of the no-growth quagmire of Brexit and start giving people hope for a better, brighter future.””

In future generations, when your children and grandchildren look back on this moment, they are not going to ask about the price of eggs. They are going to ask you what you did. Not what you felt. Not what you paid. But what you did. And I want to be able to say I did everything I possibly could.

All I can say at this stage is… FINALLY! 💥

Absolutely @eddavey.libdems.org.uk

The "West" is over now that the US is a rogue state, but new and stronger alliances can be formed among those who have been betrayed. And the global south absolutely must be empowered after being oppressed and exploited by the global north. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

My vote for stunning pic of the week in @plosbiology.org - this one was made by @b-wink.bsky.social in Christian Klaembt's lab, and shows the larval fly brain, stained for STAT activity (green), glial cells (magenta) and neural lamella (blue). I've appended the full version.

First Post on blue-sky. We are hiring! Post-doctoral position available in the neuroimmunology of stroke. Please check out link below and share elxw.fa.em3.oraclecloud.com/hcmUI/Candid...

This katydid from Ecuador has been affectionately named by photographers "candy-cane katydid". The truth is... we are not sure which species it is. One possibility is a Harroweria nymph, but until someone witnesses the transformation into the adult stage it will remain a mystery.

If you ever wondered what you would have done in the 1930s to stop the rise of right-wing extremism, authoritarianism and the marginalisation of vulnerable people. Look into the mirror. And now ask ask yourself what you have been doing over the past weeks.

I am part of the 25%. The lifestyle change is worth it. This is the way…

Today is my father's birthday. A retired emeritus professor of biochemistry and a personal inspiration to me becoming a scientist. After completing his PhD in Upsalla university in 1978 he returned to Cameroon and went on to train a whole generation of African biochemists.

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.

Scientists are now organizing events, called Stand Up for Science, on 7 March in Washington, D.C., and state capitals. So far, they have attracted more than 100 volunteers from some 30 states who are hoping to rally support for research as a public good. scim.ag/4328LAD

This, 💯! I'm very proud to work for a journal and organisation that stand by these principles.

- If you want to avoid plane crashes, don't fire FAA staff - If you want to avoid outbreaks, don't fire CDC & EIS staff - If you want to excel in science, don't fire NIH & NSF staff - If you want to protect the environment, don't fire EPA staff - If you want drug safety, don't fire FDA staff

This cartoon by @mluckovich.bsky.social is getting banned on Twitter. Because of course it is.

JFC indeed.

31 years ago today my father died from metastatic melanoma, leaving 5 kids ages 5-22. Today he would have likely been cured. 36 years ago my uncle died of AIDS. A few years later and he may be still alive. I’m older now than both of them were when they died. 1/2

Since RFK Jr just got confirmed today, I am taking this chance to share this wonderful @sciam.bsky.social piece on The Staggering Success of Vaccines www.scientificamerican.com/article/see-...

Encyclopædia Britannica will continue to use ‘Gulf of Mexico’ for a few reasons: -We serve an international audience, a majority of which is outside the U.S. -The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water, and the U.S.’s authority to rename it is ambiguous. 🧵⬇️

Thank goodness for the American Medical Association. Here is their YouTube page. Please share far and wide. Right now bird flu is spreading throughout our country and most people have no clue. Wel, no surprise that Coyne used his blog (whyevolutionistrue) to argue with the SSE/SSB/ASN letter about definitions of sex. I'm not going to engage deeply with the letter here. Like any committee-drafted text it reflects compromises; I agree with some phrasing but some could have been clearer 1/N

OK folks, I have now created a google form that allows people to sign to show their support for my open letter to the President of the Royal Society. Please sign and share widely: forms.gle/miDciq35oxyw...

I needed this today. As we all try to navigate the seemingly endless barrage of change, this is a reminder that we all have agency to make a positive difference whether we're leaders or not. Love all the practical tips! scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2025/02/11/d...

Reposting this on the strength of the cool title and the excellent schematic in Fig 1 (the rest of the paper looks good, though - saved for bedtime reading...).
