Stumbled across this old interview I did on Roman Scotland a few years ago. Might be of interest to some www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Might be almost too late but Mike Bishops Roman Road book is 99p on kindle today. Deal probably ends in 45 minutes so get it quick! www.amazon.co.uk/Secret-Histo...

If you fancy hearing me talking about my adventures as I travelled along a Roman Road through Scotland, join me for a free illustrated online lecture organised by the Roman Road Research Association on Thursday, 20 Feb 2025 19:30 Book your place here: shorturl.at/hCLPS #RomanFortThursday

Kind of appropriate that it came out on #RomanFortThursday - my book 'Military Households of Roman Auxiliary Commanders in Western Europe and North Africa' is now published! www.barpublishing.com/military-hou...

Really excited that my book 'Roman military households' is now published! Available from BAR Publishing (below) or from all good archaeology libraries.

Let's start the week with some splendid spolia. This porch was built onto the schoolhouse in Rochester, Northumberland in 1852. Look closely and you will see that is was in fact largely constructed from ancient Roman stones taken from the nearby fort known in ancient times as Bremenium. #spolia

A night time shot of the wonderful Trajan’s Column in Rome. It depicts in significant detail the Roman campaigns in Dacia (Romania)

Here’s a link to a fun podcast I did a wee while ago on Roman Scotland youtu.be/LH7BcAHnykM?...

Tonight's (3/2/2025) Combined Herts Archaeological Societies lecture (on zoom) is Geoff Lunn: "Observations on Roman roads in East Anglia based on Lidar, geophysics and aerial imagery". Free tickets on Eventbrite: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/observatio... @romanroan.bsky.social @theromansoc.bsky.social

Bit of a dreich day here in Scotland, so here’s a flashback to the Parco degli Acquedotti - a park in Rome with different surviving sections of Roman aqueduct. Taken on very warm and humid day in March

The porta nigra in Trier, Germany. The best preserved Roman gatehouse in the world. Very little of it has been altered since Roman times.

Looking forward to this one 👇

There are still modern offerings made on this (originally unused) Roman altar at Great Chesters fort on Hadrian’s Wall

Roman fortifications on the 1st century Gask Ridge frontier running through Perthshire in Scotland. Running through the valley, the fortifications were connected by a road.

Limestone corner on Hadrian’s Wall. The stone was dug from the ground to create a ditch and left abandoned on either side

Celebrate #BurnsNight by listening to @romanscotland.bsky.social talk about what Rome got up to in what is now #Scotland. Over two episodes we discuss fortifications, campaigns and a few misconceptions. I also discover a love of fortlets. #ancientrome Episode one sites.libsyn.com/105935/roman...

Fortifications on the 2nd century Roman Antonine Wall which runs across central Scotland

Shameless plug: on Hadrian's 1,948th birthday you can read about the Roman emperor's life, achievements and struggles in my book 'Bar Kokhba: The Jew Who Defied Hadrian and Challenged the Might of Rome' published by @penandswordbooks.bsky.social. www.penandswordbooks.com/978178383185...

A surviving ditch from a Roman camp at Burnswark in southern Scotland. The camp was possibly part of seigeworks attacking an indigenous settlement on top of Burnswark Hill

Really recommend this guide

Solidarity with all my colleagues, friends, and those affected by all the repressive Executive Orders being issued in America. Stay strong. As they use to say in British Intelligence in WWII "don't let the b*stards grind you down!*

These are a selection of Roman camps in Perthshire, from multiple periods, along with the presumed route of the Roman road. The map was produced for a @scarf-scot.bsky.social regional framework and is free to use under Creative Commons

Bit of a sad day as I lock down my account on Twitter and put it into cold storage. Had great experiences & met lovely people over there, but I'm really not into salutes even if they are (falsely) ascribed to the Romans. I also don't support those who salute or those who make excuses for them

The Roman camp at Abernethy

Tower of London (England) @romanscotland.bsky.social image turned into a fantasy Castle mock-up with defensive hoarding as a bit of fun. #TowerOfLondon #medievalsky

Just north of Perth lies a 1st century Roman fort, 3rd century Roman camp (Grassy Walls) and an undated Roman camps. The white line represents the possible routes of the undated Roman road through the area

My phone has reminded me that a year ago today, the cover for my book on Roman London was sent to me. You can get a copy of the book here - www.amberley-books.com/a-short-guid...

A Roman distance slab from the Antonine Wall. It marks a length of wall built by a detachment of soldiers. Now on display in the Hunterian
