seeing news & views like this, purporting & pontificating & proselytising the automagical, astronomical productivity boosts of AI, I oft think of this wee passage @doriantaylor.com shared on the other site upward o' 9 yrs ago, from a book called "Software Engineering Economics" published in 1981

A massive blackout affecting Spain, Portugal and parts of France is creating chaos on a huge scale, with trains not running, planes grounded, and traffic lights out. Engineers face the arduous task of getting power back, which could take up to several days in some areas.

semi-serious answer: 3 high schools for the price of half a baseball stadium? Sure, why not. real answer: that pps isn't exploring other options including scaled down proposals while wweek's campaign against this overrelying on one demographer's estimates is why this city loves stepping on rakes

this is a fireable offense, full stop. also his son is 21 years old. you'd forgive him, but man....this is beyond boneheaded.

"Ask the AI, not your neighbors, family or friends for help." - Every ad in 2025

cyberpunk is a warning, not a manual - this really lays it out

Bookshop has free shipping today (US only), so if you haven't grabbed the print version of my book, today might be a good day to order it. bookshop.org/p/books/incl...

Service design is understanding that some people go to the store not just to buy but to feel. For people of a certain age, systems and structures offer orientation, recognition, and a sense of place. We're rapidly dismantling that architecture out of convenience, but in the service of who?

Whenever I hear Yard Act - Tall Poppies, I feel compelled to play Courtney Barnett's song "Small Poppies" but both are great in their own right with stellar riffs. #nowplayijg #musicsky youtu.be/SLki7AbysmI

Everyone should read Carolyn Marvin's out of print book "When Old Technologies Were New" about the early electricity era. It's from 1988

my kinda favorite thing to do is buying a domain for a project I end up not launching & then repurposing it for something entirely unrelated.

This is a spot-on take. B-tier major cities have to capitalize on their moment in the sun, especially when it feels like the good times are rolling. Missing the window is how good teams get stuck in rebuild mode except cities aren't sports: the costs of underperformance are structural and lasting.

What happens to society when the capacity to act without consequence becomes the operational norm, not the exception?

Love that we live in an earth-bound version of Spaceballs.

Briefly watching the NFL Draft because there's nothing more American than a thing that could be a phone call lasting 3 days and it appears that the powers that be haven't remembered there are 6 uniformed services now (not counting the USPHS and NOAA Corps) when they leave out the Space Force lol.

Just explained to the bf of one my players - the kids are 90s vintage obsessed - about British Knights sneakers and LA Gear lol
