Trump's long-held tariff fixation is not about border security or drugs. It's simpler: he believes that tariffs as government income can enable income tax reductions. Since tariffs are a "consumption tax" it's a much smaller cost factor to billionaires than to people spending every dollar they earn.

Had a conversation with a friend today, a well educated retired dentist. Said he didn't really understand what tariffs are and how they work. I explained, concluding with...
