Thanks to @ronmknox.bsky.social for chatting about the importance of small businesses with me. Full interview is at screwed.substack.com/p/youre-prob....

1. Big news! The FTC took action today to end Walmart’s stranglehold on the grocery market. The agency filed suit against Pepsi for giving illegal and unfair price advantages to Walmart while charging competing grocery retailers higher prices.

1. The FTC today sued Pepsi, the food and drink giant, for conspiring with one big box retailer to rig the price of its sodas and chips while ripping off small stores and grocers. Yes, this is about fairness, about bullying that creates food deserts. It's also about the end of the age of Walmart.

This paper is especially important in light of the FTC's case against Southern Glazer's. It turns out, enforcing laws against price discrimination helps protect competition AND keeps prices lower!

This is a big deal, especially for independent grocers. Let's make this "the end of the age of Walmart."

1. This is a beautiful piece about the local grocers that have opened in struggling food-desert communities — only to find that they must pay suppliers much higher prices than the big boxes, making it difficult to stay open. The solution is simple: resume enforcing the Robinson-Patman Act.

In a bold move to hold corporate profiteers accountable, the DOJ Antitrust Division added six corporate landlords to their lawsuit against RealPage for “participating in algorithmic pricing schemes that harmed renters.”

1. Hello. States are on the front lines in the fight against corporate power. State leadership in antitrust has been crucial - and continues to be so. Next week, @ilsr.bsky.social and @stateinnovation.bsky.social are hosting a discussion on how states can carry the antimonopoly movement forward.

For decades, big retailers have been allowed to dominate simply by virtue of their size & leverage over suppliers. The FTC's revival of the Robinson-Patman Act stands to change that, with huge upsides for local economies & consumers, @ronmknox.bsky.social writes. And it's got support on the new FTC.

I've yet to find a mainstream story on the net neutrality ruling that mentions U.S. broadband is a failed market dominated by entrenched regional monopolies pampered by corrupt state and local governments it's like that essential part of the story isn't of interest to them

I guess one way a monopolist can kill a a smaller rival's antitrust lawsuit is to just buy that smaller rival. Seems fine! www.law360.com/competition/...

Landlords who collude using potentially illegal algorithms are forcing tenants to pay more. In Denver, renters paid an average of $136 more every month to landlords who used rent-setting algorithms. And nearly 50% of Denver landlords are using them.

Today I have a piece in ProMarket that uses present-day tensions between antitrust and industrial policy to think about their historical relationship and the broad ways that states shape markets.

Hello. Decades of allowing big box retailers to bully their suppliers and smaller rivals has meant disaster for workers, small shops and communities across America. Now, the FTC has proposed a new economic guiding light: Fairness. New from me in @thenation.com www.thenation.com/article/econ...

Tomorrow morning, the FTC is hosting a virtual public workshop on predatory pricing and how to revive enforcement. Amazon, airlines, pharmacy & more are likely to be part of the discussion. It's a good lineup of speakers, including me.

Amazon's warehouses are abusive and dangerous, the Senate HELP Committee report makes that clear. But don't forget: Amazon insulates its warehouses from competition by strongarming sellers on its monopoly platform into using its logistics business. “The Kroger-Albertsons ruling might be the last hurrah of Lina Khan’s FTC tenure, but it probably will not be the last victory for the movement Khan represents.” Reflections on the lasting impact of the antimonopoly movement from @stacyfmitchell.bsky.social www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

A crucial thread on how, and why, today’s FTC lawsuit is about so much more than liquor stores. It’s about a return to fairness as our economic guiding light and opportunity for small business and communities.

The FTC’s decision in the 1980s to abandon the Robinson-Patman Act was one of the most consequential policy decisions of the last 50 years. It decimated rural and urban communities. Here's our statement on the FTC's important move today to revive enforcement of the law: ilsr.org/articles/sta...

Yes! After decades of declining to enforce the Robinson-Patman Act, the FTC has filed a case! This is fantastic news for local, independent retailers and the customers and communities they serve. And big thanks to Commissioner Bedoya, who has been leading the call for a fair playing field.

Yes, the FTC’s price discrimination suit against Southern Glazer’s is about liquor store competition. But it’s also about grocery prices. It’s about what stores can exist in your neighborhood. It’s about fairness as our economic guiding light, instead of bigness. www.ftc.gov/news-events/...

Here's a story from @lukewgoldstein.bsky.social on the FTC suing the leading alcohol distributor for jacking up prices on independents, reviving the Robinson-Patman Act for the first time in 25 years. prospect.org/economy/2024...
