Can't quite give up yet, even though the odds are high that humans have irrevocably messed up our planet. I campaign for climate action & nature protection; research and share the science. All life is precious; knowing is key to survival.

First 28 days of 2025 were 1.75°C above pre-industrial! Even with La Niña cooling the planet down somewhat, this will be the hottest January in history. The Global warming rate might have more than doubled!

There's natural variability in climate, but it's never changed so rapidly and dramatically. We know it's due to humans because when we only look at the natural forcing and ignore human influence, we can't reproduce the observed changes. It's real and it's us. www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/w...

Thames Water rescuers demand temporary renationalisation to cut debts, oust bosses.. After that they want reprivatisation, return to profiteering, dividends, exploitation. Nothing will change until profit motive is eliminated. Need public ownership. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

First they came for the immigrants, and I spoke out, because I’ve read the damn poem before and I know how it ends.

“Today, governments around the globe spend nine times more making fossil fuels cheaper than they do on making clean energy more affordable for consumers" This is the absolute nub of the problem www.theguardian.com/environment/...

In early 2020, a pandemic was spreading. The UK’s PM went on a 10 day half-term holiday during which he was uncontactable and the government went into panic mode, focusing, as Hancock related to the COVID enquiry, on buying enough body bags. 1/8

These extraordinary photos of the LA fires have been shared widely on social media, often without crediting the photographer. These are all the work of Ethan Swope, an LA-based photojournalist working for AP. You can follow his remarkable reporting here👇 www.instagram.com/ethanswopeph...

Hollywood is on fire , yet still deniers clutch at straws to blame this on anything other than the real problem– climate breakdown . I’m petitioning for a ban on fossil fuel ads to take the fight to the companies who continue to exploit our fragile planet petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

“Latest science shows 1 metre of sea level rise now inevitable within a century or so & could come as early as 2070”. How on earth do political leaders read this stuff & reconcile it with their continued failure to act? ‘Cognitive dissonance’ doesn’t come close ….

Why is 1.5C so important? It’s the threshold beyond which previously stable planetary systems are at higher risk of "tipping" into a new state, which could make civilisation difficult to maintain... youtu.be/U8pLrRkqbb0?...

It's getting hotter faster... "2024 was a record 1.60°C over the 1850-1900 IPCC pre-industrial baseline, using Copernicus data. To be more precise, I got 1.598°C, so we'll have to wait and see whether Copernicus settles on 1.59°C or 1.60°C, when they announce on January 10." - Prof Eliot Jacobson

And so it begins… You can’t appease these people. They only respond to decisive limits. Don’t implement them and they’ll take the piss. We are already in a democratic recession. Labour’s inaction won’t just screw them, it’ll screw us all. Our elections will be bought.

We cannot address climate change unless we tackle the full range of polluting sectors — including food and agriculture. After all, our food system emits 22-34% of our greenhouse gas emissions! But how? Here’s a place to start: get the facts right. Go.ted.com/jonathanfoley24

Manchester Jan 2025 Who will be imprisoned for this? No one. Who will pay for remedial work? Us, one way or another. Who will profit? The oil industry. Energy companies amassed billions in profit and gov subsidies whilst activists who tried to avert this were jailed. Free activists; imprison CEO's

“If we’re to have hope of flourishing during the coming #climate breakdown, we need a movement that invites people to share in its determination to act …channelling our energy into practical solutions for adapting to the climate crisis that’s already here” - important from @rupertread.bsky.social 👇

Steve says Happy New Year... here's hoping! Best wishes to all.

In 2025 our love for this world has to become more ferocious. We cannot bottle up our righteous fury at forces who are knowing setting the world on fire and actually *want* it to burn because they think they will be safe. Whether in their palaces in the sky or their palaces down here on earth.

If SEZs are so great for economic growth, why are they not being trumpeted by the MSM? open.substack.com/pub/european...

Pity it isn't mentioned on main news very much but still good to see the topic being raised... youtube.com/shorts/U3fPf...

Excruciating “12 #climate resolutions” – you have to weep for this species, even though it’s a stone-cold killer marchudson.net/2024/12/27/e...

If they also remove the corporate clause that profit overrides all other considerations, we might start to see a glimmer of hope for humanity's future...

I’m old enough to remember Boris Johnson telling businesses Brexit paperwork could go in a bin. Now they need a warehouse to store it in

How can we restore hope for a liveable future? 1 stop corporations prioritising profit over all else 2 ban political donations/donor influence over government/democracy 3 re-nationalise life essentials - water, energy, infrastructure, etc 4 live within planetary boundaries 5 intl law of ecocide

Just how catastrophic things will get is still up to us. We're on track to 3C+ of warming this century, which means losing around 50% of species. Preparation, adaptation and preservation should be our aim. Chasing economic growth at this stage is simply suicide. youtu.be/qJwsJhFK98o?...

NEW report from us @wildjustice.bsky.social today - #LostNature - which details how housing developers are failing wildlife across the board on every measure . 🧵

Dear Climate Friends, A friend of mine is arguing with one of their relatives about climate change, and wants to find a good (but easy to read) reference on the geologic history of CO2 and global temperature changes -- showing that other forces (orbital variations, etc.) play a role. Suggestions?

Of course they do. Has no-one twigged that developers care nothing for the natural world? These cheats and liars will do anything to maximise the bottom line - profit www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Remember all the outraged coverage about a handful of climate protesters slowing ambulances a few years back? Well it turns out that wealthy farmers doing exactly the same thing on a much bigger scale is absolutely fine bylinetimes.com/2024/12/12/t...

Labour saying the same as the Tories, 'there's no money for public services.' Jeremy Hunt drove up State aid (public money) funding for 74 SEZs up to £160 million per SEZ = £11 billion 840 million of your money going to subsidise companies. Thread

Major investigation of offsets projects ('carbon markets') shows only 16% of carbon credits issued constitute real emission reductions Yet countries agreed major new C markets at #COP29 with no obvious tightening of standards Vast majority of offsetting is a scam www.nature.com/articles/s41...

"Human-caused climate change is poised to be the greatest injustice in history. The reach of climate change is global. The scope of climate change within the lifetime of a young person today will be monumental and tragic." (James E. Hansen, Dec 9th, 2024)

As Christmas overconsumption approaches, Carl Sagan's words on religion always spring to mind: "far better to grasp the universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring". Let's unite to preserve the miracle of life in all its forms on this lonely planet.

🚨BREAKING🌍🌡️📈 New Science paper finds that the increase in Absorbed Solar Radiation from decreasing low altitude clouds is responsible for 0.2°C additional warming! 0.12°C of that over Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes. In line with the aerosol termination shock we feared!

2023 global temp rose to nearly 1.5C above pre ind, 2024 touching 1.6C. Why? Increasing loss of albedo. Fewer cooling, low level clouds due to reduced aerosols from cleaner shipping. Real time effects of humans messing with complex climate systems. phys.org/news/2024-12...

Hard to get my head around what we have in store. Article explains "committed" warming. Graph (linked from article) shows fossil fuel era (pink) effect on future global temps if net zero emissions stabilises climate: ~3C over pre ind for millenia to come.. www.theclimatebrink.com/p/climate-ch...

"The world, with all its evils, is vast and terrible, but there is a corner of it that you can tend, that you can preserve with your heart and your mind." www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

"Has global warming accelerated?" "Yes!"

Everything these psychos are doing under the guise of "trail hunting" is illegal... all I want for Christmas is a #RealBanNow

Will we write off 2C in the same way we have written off 1.5C? Prof Kevin Anderson thinks 2C is still possible but only with immediate radical societal change alongside the tech. Lots to unravel here... youtu.be/yULdkWpjmM0?...

How many of us would be prepared for a sudden crisis? Is it time we talked about collapse preparedness as a society, or would that wake us up too much for the liking of those protecting "business as usual"" www.theguardian.com/world/2024/n...

It is a while since I posted this, but just your annual reminder that Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) will never scale to compensate all emissions (& it would be a ludicrously expensive alternative to reductions). If you like your money, then the razor-sharp focus would be on reducing emissions!

Climate change = pricier food. Hedgefund-owned farmland = land price rise = pricier food. Supermarket profiteering = pricier food. Neoliberalism = low wages = can't afford the food. Looks like there's trouble ahead... eciu.net/analysis/rep...
