As the world of science wakes up to modern fascism, it's worth remembering older generations who stood up for humanity in much harsher circumstances. Jacques Monod worked actively for the resistance in WWII, while pursuing early stages of his research in occupied Paris. @standupforscifr.bsky.social

Rita Levi-Montalcini defied fascism, which excluded her from university due to her jewish ancestry, by setting up a clandestine lab in her own bedroom. During 1940-42 she carried out experiments that set the foundations for her Nobel-prize-winning research a decade later. nautil.us/a-lab-of-her...

Friends, I am at a loss of words for how devastating it would be to lose the entire intramural #NIH program. Some of the biggest medical and scientific breakthroughs have come from scientists in the NIH Intramural program. #SaveTheNIH 🧬🧪 🖥️ 🧠 www.science.org/content/arti...

🧵Delighted to share a new guest post by Dr Anne Toomey on **8 things scientists can do right now to stand up for science in the US** Thread of her *evidence-based* actions follows, whole post here christinapagel.substack.com/p/eight-thin... 1/11

As the #measles outbreak continues, and has now unfortunately resulted in the death of a child, I see a lot of posts along the lines of: "I had measles as a child and I'm fine". Let me tell you a different version of that story: 🧵1/11 🧪 #medsky

🧵 Trump’s USAID funding freeze abruptly halted critical global health research, abandoning participants mid-trial. A gross ethical violation. @bachynski.bsky.social & I explain what happened and why it matters @bmj.com . ⬇️ www.bmj.com/content/388/...

The procedure for thin-film PEDOT:PSS electrodes and organic electrochemical transistors includes mask design, three photolithography stages, integration with larger scale electronics, implantation procedures and their characterization. @natprot.bsky.social 🧪 #neurosky

A procedure for the delivery of plasmids selectively to single pyramidal neurons in the mouse dorsal hippocampus via two-photon visually guided in vivo single-cell electroporation. @natprot.bsky.social 🧪 #neurosky

A procedure for two-photon laser microsurgery, where femtosecond laser pulses sever the presynaptic axon from its cell body, testing neurotransmission across a synapse in a whole neuron while its activity is being recorded. @pjsjostrom.bsky.social @hovywong.bsky.social 🧪 #neurosky

Our latest paper (@alannawatt.bsky.social & @pjsjostrom.bsky.social) is out in Nature Protocols! (rdcu.be/d9f3v) When a conversation goes wrong, do we always blame the listener? But then when a brain connection goes wrong, doesn't it seem unfair to always blame the "listener" neuron? (1/3)

A multimodal imaging pipeline to decipher cell-specific metabolic functions and tissue microenvironment dynamics. Nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry can differentiate between isotopes derived from labeled metabolites at subcellular resolution. 🧪 @natprot.bsky.social

The procedure covers microfabrication approaches including the conformal deposition of metallic and dielectric thin films, nonplanar two-photon lithography, wet etching and focused ion beam milling/deposition. 🧪 #neurosky @natprot.bsky.social

Endlessly reading news, but can’t recall details of it later? Worried you rely on the internet/your phone to store things instead of your brain? Me too. I explored for @nature.com whether the internet (and AI) is worsening human memory, according to research. www.nature.com/articles/d41... 1/3

22 tactics broadly map onto industry approaches to manufacture doubt and manipulate the use of science in policy and practice. Many of these strategies have been used to control the narrative and reduce, weaken and delay legislation that would tighten controls on the water industry. 🧪

Acquisition and processing of MRI datasets suitable for epidemiological, cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. The approach facilitates the comparability, interoperability and reusability of large-scale neuroimaging data in multisite studies. 🧪 #medski @natprot.bsky.social

“One of the challenges in science journalism is the oversimplification of research findings to attract attention. Headlines such as “scientists find cure for cancer” or “ozone layer is healing” are designed to attract readers’ attention but often misrepresent the complexity of scientific research.”

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas from Brighton, East Sussex, started with my local parkrun, Christmas edition 🎄🎄🎄

Fake or flawed studies are polluting systematic reviews in medicine and other fields - but how do you spot them? For Nature, I report on efforts to create a short checklist of red flags, and on the automated integrity tools emerging to help. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Here is a starter pack for the Nature Research journals that make up the Physics & Chemistry portfolio – that's the group I oversee. And unfortunately, the creator of a starter pack automatically gets included, so you're stuck with me in there too... sorry! 🧪 (Flagging for #Chemsky)
