Let me share a #painting with you. I painted this miniature of "Gorey, Main Street" because squares and rectangles and shopfronts and streets make me happy. And because the first family holiday I ever went on was nearby with trips into Gorey. But mostly because of the squares. #SpeirGorm #ArtYear

Extraordinary video of forestry minister trying to worm out of his recent comments in favour of planting conifers on peatlands youtu.be/gK6Pud-H_zE?...

Ships are fuelled by bunker oil. A fossil fuel so unrefined you could tar roads with it. Somehow the shipping industry has contrived to stay outside the Paris agreement. How do we clean up the 12,000 ships arriving in Irish ports every year? Listen: 👉 www.rte.ie/radio/radio1...

Wow. Reuters reporting that Xi 'expected' to attend COP30. Climate geopolitics flipping fast with China now clearly keen to take "lead" with US under Trump in retreat. "Xi is also expected to visit Brazil for [COP30], which officials expect to include some 1,000 Chinese business leaders."

One of the good ones 'one of his most outstanding tasks was the socio-housing integration project...was more than a housing plan, it was an ethical plan in search of ensuring one of the main rights of every human being, to have a decent home.' pepemujica.com/en/#gsc.tab=0

"In Ireland, we mind people". My mucker, the beautiful @loumathews.bsky.social I know the most beautiful spirits in the feckin world.

Every time a politician says “it’s common sense” it seems to be code for “I’m ignoring the science”.

the government has proposed that deficits in university research be addressed by attracting clever(er) people from the states with lucrative offers of funding and compensation rather than suggesting any form of structural change or properly funding people already here doing research - what vision!

🌞Join @aicbrn.bsky.social for our upcoming in person event! 🐝We're getting together to discuss important topics around research for #biodiversity #policy - we'll explore how we can collectively build our way to a biodiversity rich island. 🌟Register by Fri 23rd May! www.eventbrite.com/e/from-gaps-...

Irish universities are pretty good at attracting talent from abroad, which is great. However when they get here there is no where for them to live with their families and child care costs are extortionate (relative to European countries), so sometimes they leave again!

Michael Healy-Rae’s trees-on-peatland plan is environmental vandalism As out of touch as Min Healy-Rae's comments are the sad reality is that he is directly responding to the calls of industry leaders such as Forest Industry's Ireland & IFA. www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025...

This, in 1935, is not too far from the camogie scorts issue-this is what happens when biological determinism is the only way of understanding sex roles & demanding a binaried way of female dress and behaviour. Sound familiar … much the same comes from contemporary transphobes #speirgorm

As I cuddle in my children this weekend my heart is sore for the parents in Gaza who cannot feed their babies, toddlers & children due to the Israeli blockade of supplies. I am so frustrated at political leaders across the EU doing nothing to stop it. Shame on us all.

I will forever be haunted by this footage. Trawling has only been filmed underwater a few times in documentary history, and never with such clarity. What’s so heart-rending about these shots is watching how the animals don’t just get swept up — they swim for their lives. 🌎🦑🧪

Today the European Parliament will vote to strip the Wolf of its strict protection. This is a politically motivated U-turn away from science-based conservation. This undemocratic move sets a dangerous precedent by prioritising persecution over co-existence #SaveTheWolf #HandsOffNature

I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world. This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵

15+ years old, but still VERY relevent — and if we had acted 15 years ago, the “better world” we’d be creating would be a LOT better & easier to reach. There are real consequences we’re just starting to see to not heeding this cartoon a lot sooner. Even worse if we don’t heed it now. #ClimateCrisis

3rd keynote in 3 weeks coming up. Thanks to everyone for opening up space for discussions around reframing road safety and remarketing our streets.

Calling all scientists, science postgrads & anyone who’s ever worked in a scientific discipline! Can you spare even just half an hour next Tues 12pm to join me, Chris Packham & 100+ scientists to urge for government policy to be informed by science? Let’s fill Parliament Square with scientists! 💪

Civil-society-led climate assemblies keep deliberative democracy sharp. Make demands, not just recommendations. Deliberative democracy isn’t about advising power. I’s about challenging it. Thanks for this piece @bankfieldbecky.bsky.social et al. 🔗 journal.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/articles/13/...

Why can’t we have nice things like reliable buses and safe cycling lanes? Because a coal company who built an unmanned petrol station - after this Bus Connects route was planned - says it has a “constitutional right to make a living”, apparently.

“We are breaking the bodies and the minds of the children of Gaza. We are starving the children of Gaza, because if we don’t do something about it, we are complicit in what is happening before our very eyes. We are complicit. We are causing this, you, us and everyone who does nothing about it.”
