Important post-election analysis, and relevant to my coverage of the rightward-shifting Indian vote, by the good people at @uoftcities.bsky.social! schoolofcities.github.io/canada-elect...

The Local followed tonight's election—a decisive Liberal victory, though incredibly slow to be counted—to find out how the Greater Toronto Area fared. The result? In a Liberal wave, some surprising corners of Conservative success. thelocal.to/gta-federal-...

Toronto stays Liberal, but Conservatives make inroads in the GTA. thelocal.to/gta-federal-...

It's election day at last. Catch up on our coverage of the races in the GTA here: thelocal.to/spring-2025/

Tomorrow is election day in Canada! The Local has been reporting from all corners of the Greater Toronto Area on the issues that matter to voters, candidates, and the future of the country. Missed a story? Here’s a recap of the issue for your #WeekendRead. 🧵https://thelocal.to/spring-2025/

This is the truth of reporting on the election: Conservatives aren't giving the press the time of day. It's a problem for the media, for our readers, and for democracy. ( For my story, I reached out to six Conservative candidates in Peel and not a single one responded directly.)

Lots written about Poilievre's restrictions on the press, but I'm not sure the public knows that local Conservative candidates across the board are refusing interviews. I wrote about why that's a problem. thelocal.to/conservative...

Much has been made of Pierre Poilievre’s interactions with the press. The refusal of the Conservatives to make their local candidates available for media questioning deserves attention as well. thelocal.to/conservative...

The phenomenal @rebeccaga0.bsky.social spent time with young Conservatives ahead of a generation-defining election, in which more young voters are leaning right than ever before. Here's what she heard on the ground - equal parts a fun read and a grim reflection of what's going on with young people.

"Historically, immigrants in the GTA, including South Asians, have been understood to be a reliably Liberal voting bloc. But it’s 2025, and we know that immigrants aren’t a monolith." Phenomenal story by @royinori.bsky.social thelocal.to/india-canada...

Incredible, nuanced story from @royinori.bsky.social. Absolutely vital election reading.

Tensions between Justin Trudeau & Indian PM Narendra Modi in recent years have presented the perfect moment for Conservatives to capture a Hindu voter base that has, globally, been shifting right, as dogwhistle allegations of "anti-Hindu" sentiment fly. My latest, and perhaps most personal story:

If you read anything today, let it be this! Nick's excellent deep-dive on how Jamil Jivani's friendship with J.D. Vance went from making him one half of a "cross-border political power duo," to being a liability in his campaign. How will Jivani's brand of culture war conservatism fare this election?

GTA voters: isn't it annoying that to find all the candidates for your electoral riding (or others!) you need to go to the Elections Canada website, which looks and feels like it was built uh, several years ago? We thought so too! Here's our solution.

There's so much to keep up with this election season. If you want in-depth coverage of under-reported issues from Toronto and the GTA, subscribe to @thelocal.to's newsletter! We're kicking off our Federal Election issue today and we have incredible work on the way. thelocal.to/subscribe/

Kicking off our Federal Election 2025 issue, the always sharp @dhritigupta.bsky.social spent time in the west end following a beloved local NDP candidate and the Liberal newcomer running against her. She asks: how much does a local leg up help against a struggling party name?

New from me: I've spent the last 6 months compiling a map of data centres, whose locations are generally secret, operated by Amazon, Microsoft and Google. Cross-referencing that map with areas of water scarcity shows many are in the world's driest areas. www.source-material.org/amazon-micro...

Phenomenal story from Simon, it's essential reading this election season. Don't miss it!

McGill's administration is severing its contract with the student union - thereby jeapordizing funding for every campus student group and newspaper - over the right to protest for Palestine (and in retaliation for the actions of a few protestors).

We rightly criticize American universities for cracking down on pro-Palestine speech at the behest of Trump admin. And yet, Canadian universities like McGill are doing essentially the same thing, but of their own volition. Shame.

Student journalism is foundational to becoming a good reporter, to building healthy campus life, to fostering a sense of self & community among students. It's supremely fucked up in that young people are being robbed of this right by their government. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Fantastic to see this deep-dive from Wency get the recognition it deserves 🥳!!

Pierre Poilievre is trying to distance himself from Donald Trump Except American right-wing MAGA media personalities keep rooting for Pierre Poilievre to win

"80 men per cell, with steel planks for bunks, no mats, no sheets, no pillow. No television. No books. No talking. No phone calls and no visitors...It was exile to another world, a place so cold and far from home they may as well have been sent into space." time.com/7269604/el-s...

#NEW: Toronto police want to obtain facial recognition tech that can "continuously compare" suspect images against new images added to its booking database. I got hold of some of the documents companies sent in. My investigation for @ricochetmedia.bsky.social ricochet.media/justice/poli...

Toronto #police move to upgrade facial recognition technology despite concerns of racial bias, surveillance overreach, and misuse at protests. “Torontonians should see this as a real threat." Journalist Xavier Richer Vis obtained new documents about the companies: ricochet.media/justice/poli...

"An estimated 1,650,000 people could die within a year without American foreign aid for H.I.V. prevention and treatment." The potential savings for the American taxpayer is less than 12 cents a day. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

We should all be horrified/vigilant/moved to action by how swiftly the Trump administration is dismantling the rights of U.S. non-citizens (whether the right to protest, cross borders, due process), and the enthusiastic complicity of individuals and institutions at every level.

It's election day (again) in Don Valley West. Here's what you need to know about the 10 candidates for TDSB trustee in the Ward 11. thelocal.to/don-valley-w...

Another important by-election for one corner of the city. Don Valley West is headed to the polls on Monday to pick their next TDSB trustee, choosing between candidates running on platforms of infrastructure improvement, overcrowding, and crucially, rolling back equity policies.

ICYMI: Last week, @thelocal.to wrapped the Immigration issue with this vital feature from Wency on the experiences of uninsured expectant parents, who are billed thousands for reproductive care. Advocates & midwives are warning that the situation is only going to get worse.

Vital reporting on a sorely under-covered issue: "As the political climate in India has shifted right, so too have politics in the Hindu diaspora." Far-right Hindu sentiment is rising in Canada, joining hands with Conservatism and gaining significant political influence.

Right-wing Hindu organizations have recently been springing up in Canada, often parroting Conservative talking points about crime, cost of living, and anti-LGBTQ politics. @desaima.bsky.social and Aniket Kali investigate this emerging political alliance. breachmedia.ca/hindu-conser...

If you're online, you're inevitably seeing vile misinformation & hate about Indians in Canada. Videos of Brampton captioned "Is this the GTA or India?", far-right conspiracies about 'replacement theory.' The Local's latest breaks down what we're seeing and, more importantly, why:
