If technology is being tested more aggressively in poorer communities, it's worth asking why www.compiler.news/ai-for-good-... @ruchowdh.bsky.social

My desire for tech ethics is not to be the convenient idiots. Trotted out to play the foil for the tech bros, applauded and snapped by the public, only to be shelved until the next appropriate moment where the veneer of accountability is required.

"Deployed poorly, so-called 'AI for Good' ... can serve as a convenient test environment for these tools in a less visible or legally restrictive environment, with local populations as collateral damage," says @ruchowdh.bsky.social of @humaneintelligence.bsky.social www.compiler.news/ai-for-good-...

During Occupy, I took a course and participated in civil disobedience. It was not only educational, it was comforting to know of a safety net outside our state. Civil disobedience requires a network of support to make it available for all. Can anyone share networks or resources here or in DM?

While I’m not giving politico a pass on this - I will say that the worst thing tech gave the rest of society is this adulation of youth and inexperience coupled with an ahistorical perception of society

Over 650 political scientists who have dedicated our lives to the study of democracy & government, have signed this letter enumerating our deep concerns about this administration’s actions that undermine the Constitution and the rule of law. Please share. urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=htt...

For me it’s how every minor social media post is followed by five fundraising emails like we’re supposed to be grateful

In case you were holding your breath for the midterms www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

I just added more things to this list today: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

For those of you who sent me polite dms that it wasn’t “our place” at the AI summit to raise these issues: - NIST AI RMF is down - 600-1 (Generative AI profiles) is down Every EO deliverable related to AI governance is down. As they said they would do.

Last time I checked Greta Thunberg didn’t gut public spending illegally and lead to mass unemployment. The false equivalency of “scolding” - how gendered - with what Elon is doing is a trap.

This is not good - completely dropping all work on bias and fundamental issues of AI to only focus on compliance (eg CSAM) and cyber is a shift away from what’s important to ensure AI is useful or beneficial. www.thetimes.com/uk/technolog...

J. Doe 2 is a USAID cybersecurity employee. On 30 Jan, they were told to give access to DOGE people who are “hackers.” J. Doe 2 told bosses this. They learned DOGE was given root access. Now, they could take over systems. 1 Feb, DOGE granted themselves access to areas requiring security clearance.

Timely cognizance from that guy not coming through that glass door in the middle of @ruchowdh.bsky.social talking to @jenpsaki.msnbc.com.

I was on MSNBC last week discussing the dangers of the DOGE puppies violating procurement requirements - such as security and (lack of) conflict of interest - to use random tech software. I should have added - Gutting accountability for the myth of efficiency enables exploitation.

I’d add to this - the quantification and valuation of “intelligence” enables the commodification of both white and blue collar jobs.

Tech you can use: - Duck Duck Go (browser) - Proton Mail (email) - Proton Drive (documents) - Signal (messenger) Consider donating/subscribing when relevant.

this is a sobering, essential article by two of the leading democracy experts in america. it does not sugarcoat the implications of trump's weaponization of the state. but two elements deserve highlighting: the role of civil society as a democratic bulwark, & the need to "stay in the game".

I was on France24’s The Debate last night discussing the implications of the summit - www.france24.com/en/tv-shows/...

I’m in Paris for the French #AISummit. Looking at the agenda I’m not convinced the summit is really taking account of the geopolitics within which technology sits right now…
