Winterberry aren't fussy about when they're pruned back and how hard; I work at a nursery and we cut ours back several times a year. Our stock is usually kept at 3' or so but if we have some that developed an irregular shape we'll take them down to a foot. They're quite tolerant

Great story! I remember those Danelectro pedals from when I was much younger and looking at getting some effects for the first time, and how much I liked the retro look of them. I'm glad they turned up!

First guess is a type of scale, but I haven't seen one that has a color to it like that...

At one point, Mark actually defended Nandina domestica. But if you think about it, the overwhelming majority of their revenue is coming from the sale of non-native plants, so they do have a vested interest in minimizing concern about seedy non-natives.

I was at the Southeastern Plant Symposium a few years ago and was quite perturbed because Mark and Tony Avent proceeded to launch into those of us concerned about invasive plants and made false claims that invasives aren't really a problem.

The movie "Canadian Bacon" was supposed to be fiction, a parody. Not reality TV. God help us.

You can't be effective in any resistance movement if you've exhausted yourself physically and mentally. Rest is as important as ever. And rest often takes the form of having fun, not just sleep. They want you fearful, so don't let them rob you of your peace and joy.

I'd love to have winterberry but I'm afraid my soil gets too dry for their liking

Same, mostly. Though it depends on how many seeds are in the packet. I've noticed that newer tomato varieties, they only give you maybe 10 to 15 seeds, if that. Basil, on the other hand, where the seeds are quite small, a single packet is more than I need for the year so I save the rest.
