oh cool I’ve been meaning to learn anxiety

An analysis of #H5N1 #birdflu viruses from Nevada dairy herds suggests the virus might have jumped into cows weeks before it was detected & the infected herds were quarantined. For bulk milk testing to stop spread, faster action is needed @worobey.bsky.social says. www.statnews.com/2025/02/25/u...

I have been asking questions in H5N1 info spaces about beef cattle, since almost all the news & research I can find is specifically about dairy cattle, and… I’m starting to think most people don’t understand that they are completely different industries with little to no overlap.

Welcome to Indian Country Ukraine

I couldn’t have freelanced without the ready availability of Joann. This is kind of a death rattle for certain kinds of crafts. Most of the independent fabric stores near me either shut down or went specialty, usually quilting. From a costuming perspective, where were you gonna find velvet?

#BlackHistoryMonth art, day 24: Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson (1767–1824) Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Belley, 1797 Oil on canvas Château de Versailles, France Belley was a former slave elected to serve in the National Convention following the French Revolution. More in the alt text.

Fabulous article: "When universities stay silent or indicate their willingness to comply with executive orders that seek to dehumanize anyone who is not white, male and cisgender, they are sending a message... you either stand with the targeted groups or you become part of the new segregationists"

You know it’s more suburbs than country when the Merlin app can’t ID the barred owl you’re hearing because of interference from your neighbor’s leaf blower

I appreciate this response from Ed Yong on why he requests that people mask at his events. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...

Just finished a phone call interviewing a potential cat adopter. It was a great call. Now I’m in bed physically recovering from the splitting tension headache and stomach woozies that always happen. Why did we have to invent phones. Seriously.

The Trump administration has just announced that all college financial aid programs, scholarships, prizes, housing, and graduation ceremonies that help Black or Latino students are now considered to be illegal. The Education Department accuses colleges of discriminating against white students.

“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”

The world has been through anti-science cycles before, to disastrous results On a detour on my lit review, a mosey through the history of our familiar friend, the standard onion (Allium cepa) brought me right to one of botany's greatest cautionary tales of what happens when ideology overrides data

Fonts are neat, and it's cool to read this much about a font I too have seen everywhere throughout my life.

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

The Associated Press says the White House blocked it from covering an official event on Tuesday because it did not refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. By @davidfolkenflik.bsky.social

If I got a ball of worms instead of an apple, I’d check to see what kind of worms they are. A ball of red wigglers & their descendants could be turning your apple cores into black gold (high quality compost) for YEARS I’m offended by Elon’s comment, on behalf of our noble worm friends

This language describes a coup. You have to be a government employee, subject to the rules & procedures that bind gov employees, to do this kind of work. This is a blatant abuse of the public trust by the Trump administration, a true 5-alarm fire. www.wired.com/story/elon-m...

This looks & sounds just like Russia's anti-LGBT law. "Trump Tells DOJ to Prosecute Teachers Who “Unlawfully” Support Trans or Nonbinary Students. The latest executive order also threatens funding for schools that teach about gender and race." www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Good 🧵

I spoke to a talented junior scientist who just got a good faculty job offer in the US and they told me “well I wouldn’t move to 1930s Germany either” so that’s how that’s going

Ok, we’ll see. Such a mess. Throw a bomb (memo) into people’s lives and livelihoods and watch them scramble.

Email from the chancellor this morning mentions that the pause on federal grants includes student financial aid. Brilliant. 🤬

The thing that’s most striking about this is that they set up an e-mail account specifically for people to report on each other for any attempt to implement “DEIA or similar ideologies” and threatened “adverse consequences” for NOT reporting.

This is a great piece. "As deportations ramp up again, we have a choice: We can watch as our neighbors disappear or we can build on these proven strategies to protect the diverse communities we've built together."

Langston Hughes knew what’s up.

Here's a small weird potentially good thing: The USPS website is still, as of a few minutes ago, processing requests under the free covid test program. No idea when that'll be shut down, but it hasn't been yet.
