So much cool research on microbial predation is coming out lately! For example; Effects of experimentally elevated virus abundance on soil carbon cycling across varying ecosystem types www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

New paper out that (we hope) will be useful to anyone with an interest in Antarctic soil microbial communities: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Time to submit those abstracts! Abstract deadline is in less than 2 weeks on Feb 24th, more information www.luke.fi/esm2025! Also news from FEMS: we are pleased to inform a thematic issue for “Ecology of Soil Microorganisms” in FEMS Microbiology Ecology academic.oup.com/femsec/pages...

The first description of mycorrhizae was published in 1885, where A.B. Frank first coined the term. His study, commissioned by the Kingdom of Prussia, explored the potential for truffle cultivation. Despite it's age, it's insightful to anyone interested in the subject. Read it ⬇️ tinyurl.com/ABFrank

It's time for a first post on this (for me) new platform, and what's better than some beautiful fieldwork photos. So here is a flashback to one of the most spectacular fieldwork campaigns I ever carried out - sampling soil cores from our fieldsites (called #ForHot) in Iceland in Feb'2022. PART ONE.

Happy that microbes had a dedicated session at the Swedish Oikos Meeting 2025! It was a lot of fun chairing the session and hearing so many interesting microbial and soil processes talks

I presented new #Arctic 13C-pulse chase data during a very fun microbial session this morning at the Swedish Oikos meeting 2025 ! @nordicoikos.bsky.social #ecology

Really nice to see the second paper of PhD student Fangbin Hou out in SBB!!! She did a massive experiment and found that across 17 grassland species, root exudates from plants that experienced drought trigger more microbial respiration. (1) www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

The limits on the Y-axis in Fig 1 are so misleading, it nearly gave me a heart attack

From preprint straight to powerpoint slides for next week<s lecture!

Just 1 week left for #EGU2025 abstracts! Think of our session: "Microbial growth, death, and turnover: experiments and models to decode soil complexity" with invited speaker Stefano Manzoni. meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU25/sessio... with Sergey Blagodatsky & @katerinageorgiou.bsky.social

9 minutes ago Free registration is open for our next Critical Concepts in Dormancy webinar 20 Feb, hosted by American Society for Microbiology journal mSystems! asm.org/Webinars/mSy... Discuss how to evaluate microbial activity, including in challenging environments! A stellar speaker line up 🤩

#FEMSMicrobiolEcol Webinar on Microbial Impacts of Climate Change Originally broadcast on 22 November 2024, explore the latest research on how microorganisms in diverse ecosystems are responding to and influencing environmental changes.

Excited about our new paper asking: Why does the growth of most life have an optimal temperature below 40°C? We argue the average maximum oceanic temperatures of <37°C for 2+ billion years drove evolution of the temperature optima of prokaryotes. 1/5 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

How do soil microbes respond to climate change? Show off your cool studies at #EGU25 and submit your abstract now!

Ectomycorrhizal fungi from the taiga

Happy #worldsoilday !! Have you ever looked INTO soil ? If no, join us at Soilwatching: Windows to the #soil let us peek at all its inhabitants. If you know the channel already - stay tuned, there will soon be two new episodes:) www.youtube.com/@Soilwatching

go.bsky.app/ACjNUuz Let me know if you want to join 🦠🌍🤗

1/2 Are you ready for an interdisciplinary #EGU2025 in Vienna? Sylvain Monteux, me & et al set to convene a (the perfect!) #soil #biodiversity session: SSS4.3 "Diversity and #biogeochemical impacts of soil organisms in #Arctic, #Antarctic and #alpine soils" Please submit & share with your network.

Terrific science and kara-my-oke at the first ever Mycology Nordics conference! 🍄 ✨

ITS OPEN NOW, Ecology of Soil Microorganisms 2025 Summer promotion: Short nights of Northern midsummer enable lots of science! #esm2025 www.lyyti.fi/p/Ecology_of...

Exciting!!

❗️New paper alert❗️ We did a huge evolution experiment to study the effect of high fat and high sugar diet in housefly. High sugar diet causes the loss of beneficial microbiota and lower developmental success. #evolution #microbiome academic.oup.com/ismej/articl...
