the psychopomp (hermes at a deathbed), 2023

i think half of "talent" is just a person happening to have fun doing whatever it is they're supposedly talented at, and not hating it. i was "talented" at art at age 3 but if i'd stopped drawing at age 3 because i found it tedious or unrewarding, i'd probably pretty much draw like a 3-year-old now

this is so self-indulgent, but probably music. so much of harmony x is about harmonics, resonance, singing, vibration. and the cultural landscape it's taking inspiration from has a lot to draw from as well

leo begins and ends the story thinking he's the specialist boy in the world he's just handling it a LOT differently

Fictional villains: my motivation involves a complex backstory around lost love and a deep yearning to be understood Real life villains: being cruel makes me feel like a big strong man

cobbling together different versions of the same scene makes me feel like i'm going insane

I've said before that every single time I sit down to write, I rediscover how to write, but given how many times I've done it, I think this is the pattern: 1 - I am an outliner, I do my best work when outlined 2 - I WILL abandon the outline the moment something shiny catches my attention

even if you’re 100% certain that your political analysis is correct, making your entire brand being corrosive and annoying online might not be as effective as you hope. it probably feels good in a righteous fury way but come kickoff you might wish you spent a little more time coalition building

“How do you write so much?” Simple! If I do not participate in the acts of creation I will explode

Of course you don't know how to write it. That's why you have to write it

My Cutest Reincarnation

they're probably going to accidentally delete the whole thing

YOUR first draft doesn’t need to be perfect. but mine does

i feel like the only hope i have rn (to avoid the worst) is blindly believing in a critical mass of people who will say "no"

Lion's Mane Nebula ✨

Very good advice to find after a day of doomscrolling

inner layer of soil for outer layer of plants to thrive

extremely true. no one braver or stronger than queer teenagers right now

Make all things yours! Make other lives and dreams and hopes yours! Protect them! Save them! Bring them into the sheepfold! Walk the gale for them! Keep away the wolf! My dreams! My brother! My family! My land! My world! How dare you try to take these things, because they are mine! Terry Pratchett

I think to a certain extent it’s good to be aware of how an audience might interact with something you create, at the very least from an accessibility standpoint, but beyond that I think it’s easy to let an imaginary audience embody your own anxieties and hamstring your creative attempts.

I do think it’s super important right now and in the foreseeable future to really value moments of joy and to be intentional about making as many of them as you can

leo will fall into the trap, again, of being like "it's fine it's just one ingredient" and make the thing anyway. he's hopeless at this. aries, though. aries is pissed.

my preferred approach to making characters is "I'm not making a character, I'm getting to know a person" - I make a plan and let the fucker tell me how I'm wrong about half of it

been thinking about the paradox of abused children feeling safer in more chaotic environments, and how that might relate to the current political situation

Being a person with deadly, incurable cancer who is nonetheless still alive for an indefinite timeframe gives me an interesting metaphor that helps me deal with things like large-scale corruption in government or commerce. Bear with me for a second while I try to explain.

Remember that, if you follow "make weird art" or "make messy queer art" with an "except" or a "but", as far as the cudgel of censorship is concerned you too are a faggot, a tranny, a freak, a pornographer, a degenerate no matter how "not like THOSE freak weirdos" you claim you are.

David Lynch should come back to life

putting concentrated effort into learning how to pants now for this draft. the problem with telling yourself you're gonna do the work is that you actually have to do it

the reason gen z doesn’t care at all about “china having their data” is because gen z knows that the US government has collected their online activity data since they were born

ah. #WIPSnips

#BluePitHype leo receives a gold ring from marisol, his mentor-figure. he figures it's… a repurposed old wedding ring? he's slightly concerned that he remembers it from a dream sequence of her taking it off his corpse.

I don't know if this is an autistic-brain thing, but one of the thing that really freaks me out about the current reality is that I really deeply and fundamentally don't understand why anyone would ever choose cruelty over problem-solving.

It’s true that it’s better to make bad art than no art at all but that’s also true if you used to make art and feel like you can’t anymore. If you feel that desire to create again you should do it for YOURSELF. If it makes you happy, hold onto that

is HX actually used as a shorthand for "history?" that's quite a good coincidence for me specifically

hellllo #BluePitHype i'm roo, a speculative fiction writer who loves using the genre as a lens to explore: queerness, politics, religion, character-driven narratives, grief, the apocalypse, and about everything in-between. 🌅 i've had these worlds since i was a child and now i'm doing the work!

#pretendpanel probably the minimum amount of pantser it is possible to be and still be able to write a novel. if i don't outline every single beat of a scene beforehand it simply won't happen. a book is a marble sculpture etc.

doing the math nearly all of my book's characters have had ~140 past incarnations on the same planet. in a row! kind of crazy

harmony x:

idk man the ‘difficult’ language in ‘difficult’ books is part of the point. don’t you WANT to learn to parse out interesting language and complex ideas? it’s all i wanted when i was a kid! i was so impatient for it!

In 2025, I’d like to invite people to purposefully read more dense and/or complex prose. There is nothing wrong with reading slow or reading something multiple times. There’s no shame in looking up the definition of words or writing out plot events to analyze their importance.
