On this date in 2018 Mookie Betts hits 3 solo HR’s as the Red Sox defeat the Royals 5-4. For the year he hits .346 with 32 HR’s, a 1.078 OPS, and a 10.7 WAR, winning the MVP. His 10.7 WAR is the 2nd highest in Sox history for a position player, only behind Yaz’s Triple Crown Year.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Eddie Bressoud who would’ve been 93 today. He played Shortstop for the Red Sox from 1962-65. He was an AS in 1964, hitting .293 with 15 HR’s a .828 OPS and a 4.6 WAR. Overall for the Sox he hit .270 with 57 HR’s and a 11.9 WAR.

Happy Birthday to Jarrod Saltalamacchia who turns 40 today, he caught for the Red Sox from 2010-13. His best year was 2013 when he hit .273 with 14 HR’s, 40 doubles, and an .803 OPS. Overall with the Sox he hit .243 with 55 HR’s a .762 OPS and a 5.2 WAR.

20 years ago today, the Boston Red Sox signed first baseman John Olerud. He was coming off surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left foot. He proceeded to bat .289 with seven home runs in his final 87 MLB games with the Red Sox.

On this date in 1986 Roger Clemens sets a new MLB record as the 1st pitcher to strikeout out 20 in a game as the Red Sox defeat the Mariners 3-1. For the year Clemens was 24-4 with a 2.48 ERA, a 0.969 WHIP, and a 8.8 WAR. Winning both the CY and the MVP. It’s his 1st of 3 CY with the Sox.

Happy Birthday to Rick Burleson who turns 74 today. He was the Red Sox starting SS from 1974-80. He was known for his intensity, Bill Lee said of him “Some guys didnt like to lose, but Rick got angry if the score was even tied”. He was a 3x AS for the Sox, won 1 GG, and garnered MVP votes 4 yrs.

Happy Birthday to Steve Crawford who turns 67 today. He pitched for the Red Sox from 1980-87, in every role possible. His best year was 1985, he was 6-5 with a 3.76 ERA and 12 Saves. In the 1986 postseason he was 2-0, including a win in game 2 of the World Series.

On this date in 1979 Larry Bird played in his 1st and only baseball game for Indiana State. He went 1-2 with 2 RBI’s and 9 putouts at 1st base. He did it as a dare, as the Sycamores coach would always tease him, “Real men play with balls this size”. Bird gave in and tried it.

Darren Bragg was a Red Sox Outfielder from 1996 -98, he was acquired from the Mariners for Jamie Moyer on July 30th 1996. In his 3 years with the Sox he hit .264 with 20 HR’s, and a .741 OPS. His career WAR was 9.0 he accumulated 6.2 of that with the Sox.

On this date in 1982 Wade Boggs got his 1st career hit, there was 3,009 more to come, including 2,098 with the Sox, which is 5th in team history. For the year Boggs hit .349 with a .847 OPS, and a 3.9 WAR. He came in 3rd for ROY, behind Cal Ripken Jr and Kent Hrbek.

On this date in 2002 Derek Lowe No Hits Tampa Bay in a 10-0 win, and becomes the 1st pitcher to throw a No Hitter at Fenway in 37 years. Lowe in his 1st year as a full-time starter was 21-8 with a 2.58 ERA and a 7.2 WAR. He started the AS game and came in 3rd for the Cy Young award.
