It's not the most important thing in the world unto itself, but I hope that someday we will return to the era when we thought it was below the dignity of the office of the president, the head of state for all Americans, to undertake random political trolling.

The takeaway from this is *resist* because his authoritarianism may just keep coming but will be made much more difficult if he is politically weak.

Ryan speaks so well to this moment - how we the faculty have held our universities to a higher standard, how we can move them to right action by speaking loudly and together, and how universities will only continue to on the right side of history through our effort.

Have America’s universities begun the fightback against Donald Trump? I talk to Harvard’s @ryanenos.bsky.social for the latest Politics Weekly America open.spotify.com/episode/6wOr...

Fight fiercely, America

Here is the American flag pin given to me by a Harvard international student today. They are the best of us.

"We are doing this because we love this country. We love the values that it stands for and we care about its future." - Harvard's international students are an example of the best of America. apnews.com/video/harvar...

Me neither...

Gaslighting is just stupid until it's used to deny civil rights.

Resilience in action

On this day of action, faculty from around the country have one message for our boards and presidents: it's time to join together and fight back! scatter.wordpress.com/2025/04/17/5...

Happening today in Harvard Yard.

I actually think this is wrong. But only because now is way worse than the post 9-11 era. Heck, the original Guantanamo prisoners at least had lawyers.

Working on this with Steve was among the most rewarding things I have ever done.

“In March, @stevelevitsky.bsky.social and fellow prof @ryanenos.bsky.social authored a letter, co-signed by 800 colleagues, calling on Harvard to defend itself and academic freedom more broadly by mounting ‘a coordinated opposition to anti-democratic attacks.’ Their pressure seems to have helped…”

It's not hard to see why this is happening. Trump's demands are an outrageous intrusion on a private institution and the type of thing every american should oppose.

This is where I will be tomorrow at noon. Please consider joining me at the steps of Harvard Memorial Church to celebrate Harvard's Defense of Higher Education and urge resiliency moving forward.

Harvard standing up to authoritarianism is called the Right Outside Of Boston Tea Party.

Also recognize this: The manpower in surveillance and detention described here a single non-criminal person can't possible be justified by whatever "drain" one thinks an immigrant is on society. The point of these tactics are to instill fear in a population. This is what authoritarians do.

Don't let this sort of thing become normalized. No criminal record. Married with a child. Complying with immigration bureaucracy. Agents wait outside his home. Smash his window while he calls his lawyer. Take him to an undisclosed location. This is Soviet secret police stuff. youtu.be/Bnlj-wSI4Bg

Steven Levitsky,...read Dr. Garber’s letter before a class about authoritarianism and democracy. “It looks like Harvard has decided it’s time to fight,” he said when he began. The room of about 100 students, he said, erupted into applause. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/15/u...

Steve Kerr wore a Harvard basketball shirt after the Warriors’ win tonight: “Yes, this is me supporting Harvard. Way to go. Way to stand up to the bully.”

Unlike Columbia, Harvard University is standing up to Trump’s takeover of American academia, and has been hit with 2.2 billion in funding cuts and threats to it’s tax exempt status. We are joined by @ryanenos.bsky.social to discuss. soundcloud.com/user-8304426...

Hot Takes on Harvard Doing the Right Thing My initial thoughts on Harvard saying no to authoritarianism... open.substack.com/pub/ryandeno...

"If Harvard internally ends academic freedom, even while resisting the Trump administration, its resistance will be a hollow victory." This part needs to be shouted. Saying no to Trump is vital. But it is also vital that we stop punishing students for speaking out against genocide.

Trump is collapsing under the crappiness of his authoritarian incompetence. Keep pushing back until he's gone.

Each of these lawsuits is civil society standing up to the authoritarian attacking our democracy. Keep them coming. Don't stop.
